No make and model provided but.... Of course it isn't safe to eat!! It is likely a mixture of oil, broken seal dust and a little metal/rust creamed with a drop of condensation. 50 years as as a chef and I wouldn't serve that or eat it. If it was fine before stored away, then either the power is not getting to the machine, (rodent damage or corroded contacts) or there is a control fault.

Take it down to Home Depot and get one of the assistants to find you a machine screw to fit. Third suggestion.
