This is hard to diagnose without special equipment. At the very least you need an OHM meter to test the speakers to see if they are ok. Beyond that you can use headphones to see if there is audio output. Other than that you need an oscilloscope or other visual diagnostic gear to check the amplifier.

Put it on, select the tape or other aux. input. Press and hold the Phono button for several seconds and the mute light should go off and the volume get much louder.

Go down to Walmart and get CD Cleaning Disc. They have little brushes that clean the optics. Or it is a counterfeit copied disc and has become corrupt! Try the discs on another unit.
