Go into the menu options for the player, and switch to Bitstream! Not PCM

The Invalid Format message is generated when the processor can't recognize the disk. This can happen from only 2 causes:
1 - the laser sensor doesn't receives a correct signal. Not your case.
2 - the processor itself is malfunctioning. Since you can't finish the first step in troubleshooting it - the update of the firmware - it's clear that it's a hardware fault: the processor has indeed failed.
Unfortunately this is terminal: it can't be fixed so the only option would be to replace the mainboard but that's not an option - the board isn't sold as a separate part because it and the labor to install it would cost more than a new player.
Sorry, time for a new bluray/dvd player.

How are you connecting the HD-A20 to your audio device? The HDMI audio only supports PCM (Pulse-code modulation). There are other formatting issues that may be involved. So it is possible that your SD DVDs are in a supported format but not your HD DVDs. You might try a different audio connection (RCA audio or digital optical if you can) and see if the problem occurs.

What firmware do you have installed? http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/dvd/product.asp?model=hd-a20 at the Resources tab has three different Firmware update information links. (The first one is for version 4.0.) To download the firmware update, see the Customer Support drop down menu and Download Firmware.

I hope this helps.

I would unplug the HD-DVD from the wall power for 2 minutes and reboot. It sounds like a software hiccup and hopefully that will snap it out. Try another disc and double check the audio connections.

If rebooting doesn't solve, and it does this on all discs, the player is definitely malfunctioning, and you can open it up and look for bad capacitors, they will be bulged if bad

here is a pic:

let me know if you find bad caps, or if I can be of further assistance in any way. Thanks

Hi...
If it get get whacked with a surge , it may have crashed the power supply.
There might be a small glass fuse on the power supply too.
Have someone check that 1st. Otherwise it'll be cheaper to buy a new one

In some Toshiba models, only one output is active at a time. If the digital out is not active, the 'light' may not be visible.

try changing the cable, or use a different source.  It may just be the optics aren't functioning correctly.

the lens needs to be clean. Here is a link to learn how to do it, in your case, you don't need to open the case, just remove the disk and you will see it.

Make sure you have the cables hook up right. If you are running component mode it takes three for video blue red and white ends. If you are running composite it takes red, white, and yellow.

If this does this with all movies? and they are store bought originals and not scratched or have finger prints on the bottom of them? Your dvd player might need cleaning or the laser might be wearing out. Also ensure that you have the latest firmware update installed on it. You can install this update (ver 1.6) by simply pluggin in your ethernet cable to the back of your Player and follwing the steps on page 57 of your manual.

Hope This Helps

The most common causes,
1, bent or broken pins in scart lead.
2, faulty scart lead(internal wires broke)
3, mis-connected( audio out from dvd to audio out on tv.)
Just go through the list and if you have a known good scart lead, swap over to test.

Toshiba HD-A20 | Answered on Aug 16, 2009

first of all ensure ur connection is all proper refer ur manual for how to set up ur dvd player but if this is a problem thats happened to u after using the player well for a long time.... then
Sounds to me that the eye is dirty or even bad try to run a dvd cleaning disk
In your player you can get them in most all stores such as walmart etc...
try to run it in the machine if it is real dirty you may have to run it a few times
if that doesnt help you can try to do it manually by taking the cover off
your player and then opening the dvd compartment to expose the eye and clean it with a cue tip
and alcohol lightly dip the cue tip and clean the lense off I have had to do that with dvd players and old playstations in the past and it worked fine. try the disk first though before taking anything apart
good luck this should work for you.
