When playing a disc voices are destorted

Are the speakers correctly connected and assigned, particularly the Center? Perhaps it's blown or damaged. Swap another speaker into that slot (Page 16) and the center into another connector as a temporary test to prove if the speaker itself is/is not the problem.

I have a philips tv, its a 42

There are many issues that can cause that type of problem. Just take it in and pay the low cost for the estimate. It is well worth the money to do it that way.

Most probably it is a blown capacitor. So here's what you should do:
1. If and only if you have basic knowledge of electronics and are aware of the dangers the capacitors pose (even death) then open the amplifier case and look for blown capacitors (they look like batteries when they are OK and look like pop-corn when they are blown). Replace it with an identical one.
2. Take it to a specialized service where they'll do what I said at point 1.

No reception or sound on rear speakers.

Here's the fix: power off the sub-woofer and wait for 60 secs before powering it on again. My rear receiver works every time now.  I guess the sub-woofer isn't just a dumb speaker; it has some kind of smarts in it too.
Prior to this, I had only tried cycling power to the DVD player itself.  I also re-seated the two, fat cables connected to the junction box. One of them had worked itself slightly loose and the result was completely absent speaker channels.

My rear centre speaker wont stop crackling really

It's a short or a loose connection. Check where it hooks up to the surround system or sub. depending on what kind you have. Or you might have a mouse chewed it or a staple through it check the wire run for issues.

Subwoofer light

The subwoofer light stays red regardless of the state it is in despite it being labled a standby light. (It's more of a power on light) It seems that philips missed the point of what a standby light is.

I would have expected the light to have changed colour to indicate that the unit was operational and perhaps syncing with the receiver box.

Sound and picture

Check that you have connected the component video lead to the correct sockets in both the TV and the HTS9800W.

There are two sets of Phono (cinch) connectors, which are grouped together.

Red / Green / Blue - Component connectors - video only

Red / White / Yellow - Stereo audio and composite video connectors - audio and vide

If you have inadvertently connected the red audio connector to the red component input on the TV, it would cause similar symptoms as you describe.

Hdmi

Its not designed to play HD DVDs, the model has HDMI connection in order to connect to latest output devices, viz flats panels and LCD tvs there by having a common audio and video cable. your model has a feature to upscale the normal DVD singal to match the quality output of hull HD TVs, hence the HDMI out put, do not confuse this with HD compatiability.

Go to the link below to check the full specs of your system.

http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/in/consumer/cc/_productid_HTS9800W_55_IN_CONSUMER/DVD-SACD-Home-Theater-System+HTS9800W-55

though yours is a high end set, but its not HD disc compatiable.

Hi...I have a Philips HTS 9520, It is stack on (Starting) on the display when i turn it on. However, I am able to select the source, but nothing plays, not even Radio. Kindly assist.

The system must run through its routine before it can start up. If a mechanism is jammed or a switch is not contacting, it won't complete its routine and therefore will not start up.
