If you can move the .wav file to the PC it should be able to play with all mediaplayers available (for example, Windows Media player). The .wav format is very well supported, but it takes a lot of disk space: a cd in .wav format is about 600 Mb for 1 hour of music. Speech might be smaller.

You can use CDEX or AUDACITY (both free) on the PC to convert the .wav file to .mp3 (which is much smaller).

What does the manual of your VN3100 say about connecting the device to the PC and copying the files? It could be as simple as drag and drop in My Computer if it gets a drive letter.

Most likely the problem is " or something" .
I'm sure you know Windows Vista has issues with many things, even if the Recorder's software claims compatibility.
I know, that does not help at all, but there is a way around the issue.
Crude? Pehaps. Effective? Absolutely!

I use a patch cable between the AUDIO IN on my PC and the EAR on the recorder.
Since the ouput of the recorder is monoaural, all you need is a mono (2 wire) lenght of cable with a standard 3mm plug at each end. I made it myself, but I guess Radio Shack may have somethinng like that.
If they don't have it, then a STEREO cable (3 wires) will work just fine.

To record the sound I use Audacity. It's a freebie and pretty straightforward to use.

After you've plugged it in, all you need to do is start Audacity and then playback the files from your recorder.
Then you can convert them to MP3 or whatever.

Yes, it is possible that the USB cable of your recorder is defective. I think you start from there!

The PC should recognize the recorder, since it has been confirmed by you that it is in good condition.

But before you get another USB cord for the recorder, test the recorder on again on another computer. I mean the computer of a friend or family member, in order to confirm it is will detect it or not.

If the third PC you test it with still does not recognize the recorder, then it mean problem lies between the cord and recorder itself. But most definitely, problem should be from the USB cord.

So go ahead and get another USB cord for the recorder.......

it should be easy, plug into the usb and if the recorder asks something respond to it, it should then pop up on your desktop and you can get the recording from there and it should play when you open it, simple and easy.
