Problem is more than likely that the plastic brush holder got hot with continuous use and the brushes n longer slide smoothly in their housing. Sometimes they even twist a little. The only solution to this is to replace the brush holder-variable switch assembly.

hello. You loosen the arbor at the base of the shaft closest to the tool. There is a tiny wrench in the kit that came with the dremel, or you can use a pair of pliers to loosen it. Joe

Here's the email from I got from Dremel (in my case the flex coupling broke):
Inside the tool is a flex coupling and spline driver.

The flex coupling is # 2615294309 and the price is $ 1.25.
This is the hollow plastic sleeve about 1" long with grooves on the
inside, that goes between the motor shaft and the output shaft.

The spline driver is # 2615294308 at $ 1.00.
Spline driver sits on the direct end of the motor shaft. The flex
coupling sits over the spline driver. Spline driver is about 1/4",
hard plastic with grooves on the outside.

Total shipping for orders under $ 5.00 is $ 2.50. Orders over $
5.00 is $ 4.00.

My 15 year old Dremel 395 had the same problem so I took it apart. There is a plastic spline between the motor and the output shaft to the chuck . My plastic spline was split and had many of its teeth sheared off. The shaft lock acts on the output shaft side of this spline, so it was ok. Otherwise everything looked great; bearings ran free & had little play free, brushes ok. To be fair, my Dremel had seen hard use & doesn't owe me anything. No luck so far finding replacement spline parts, which if available should be easy to install. To take apart your tool, just google "Dremel Disassembly". GOOD LUCK!

Drywall dust has ruined your tool. It seizes up bearings and bushings like you wouldn't believe.

I would send it back to Dremel, they have been AWESOME to do business with, I have sent in 2 of my rotary tools, and because they couldn't be fixed, they sent me new ones at no charge, also, just bought one of their 4" table saws (off ebay) that didn't come w/an owners manula, I emailed Drwemel, and got one in today's mail, pretty kool for an item they quit making years and years ago. Hope this helps

if the motor runs fine ande the drive shaft to the tool just stops turning, look at my previous response

On the dremel 395 there are 4 visible "star" screws holding the unit together. Get a star wrench/screwdriver and remove those. They kind of look like hex bolts, but they are not, so get the star wrenches.

Now wait.

At the neck, where you have been changing collets and tip types, You may or may not have noticed that the first inch of the top of the body of the tool, the green or grey part, can be unscrewed like a light bulb. Unscrew that, usually a good grip will do.

This now lets you see that there are 2 more smaller star bolts that also hhold the body together. remove those and you will be able to easily seperate the two halves of the tool.

Try to keep the motor body, or rather, let the motor body stay in the half that it wants to. The top shaft that ends with the collet neck, will pop out with just a little coaxing.

Between the top shaft and the drive motor, you will notice some remnent of the interconnecting thing-a majig, that is looking a little ugly right now and needs a replacement. This piece connects the outer shaft and the internal motor.

I know this because one of my first calls tomorrow is to order a replacement part for myself. And I think I will order 2. It seems as though this was not a good design development, in this series.

Good luck with your repair. I do not think it is that complicated. Pull it apart, throw out the debri, use a can of compress air for your computer, put in new part, put back in 6 screws, fire it up again.

If you already checked and replaced the brushes but it is still not turning then you do these:
Try to see if your unit have a safety breaker and reset it,most of power tools have also a fuse in the plug itself.
Also some have a thermostat fuse.,you can find it attached on the rewined coil.

there is a coupling between the motor and the spindle that has probably cracked or stripped out. I suggest going to Dremel.com and getting an original replacement part for this. They are not hard to install.
