New gas can be a help...especially if the old gas is a month or more old. More important are all the different things that can lead to a no-start scenario with your machine. By process of elimination, you have to take it step by step and try to rule out all the different causes. Remember, this is an internal combusion engine, very similar to your car engine in that regard (it just doesn't have any valves and burn oil with the gas). A no start or stalling out and dying condition are the most common malady in these forums. For a start, check carbon buildup in the muffler and on the screen in the back of it. It's easy to take the muffler off. Torx head fasteners bolt it to the exhaust port of the engine. Check the exhaust port for bad buildup. Never clean it off the engine with metal...scrape it with a wooden device. Remove the spark plug. Shine flashlight down into engine. Is there a lot of carbon on top of the piston? Cleaning it up is a serious job if you remove the engine to do so.
Here is a Zama pdf file troubleshooting most possible mechanical and carburetor related problems. This is good reading and there is a lot to learn here. The charts are about 1/3 of the way into this file. Make sure all the screws and bolts to the carb and engine are tight and that the air filter is clean.

I broke th pull cord

There should be a hole in the pulley that holds the starter rope in the starter/recoil unit. If you have taken the machine apart to that point, yes, there is only one way to reassemble it.
You will have to wind the starter recoil without the rope installed on itabout 5-6 complete revolutions to "pre-load" tension on the spring-steel starter spring, then lock the pulley in place, insert the pull rope and tie it off so it can come back out and then release the pulley, letting it draw in the new starter cord. Make sure you have the handle installed so it will stop when it gets to the body of the engine cover.

Does it not hold a charge, or will the charge not indicate "fast charge"? I had to apply a initial jump charge on the battery to get it up to 20 volts, then I put it in the Ryobi Charger, and it started charging it.

I can not remove the

The knob is definitely a LEFT handed thread....try this...take a shop rag and double it. Wrap it around the red knob and with a pair of channel locks or large pliers...carefully turn it in a CLOCKWISE direction it should break loose...some crud or water may have gotten in the threads of the cap and are binding it....good maintenance tip....when you get it loose clean the threads and lubricate them with a small amount of grease on the threads....won't stick again...hope this helps...;-D

I have an electric trimmer

If you can get it going by "playing" with the cord, that is the problem. Either get a new cord or strip the one you have and find the break, repair it and go to work! Good luck...Lee
