Connecting old hard drive
Hi Dave,
Thanks for putting your concerns here and I'd pleased to assist any suitable reply.
The drive comes with an USB 3.0 cable which you'll need to connect the USB port situated on the back of your CPU or any corner (either left or right) of your Laptop. You'll need to insert one cable to the power cord as well if there is no internal source of power supply.
At last, if you're struggling while making your hard drive to work, feel free to ask.

Access denied, error performing inpage operation
Click Start, Click RUN and type cmd and Enter. You'll be in command window - then type chkdsk [drive:] /F (such as - "chkdsk e: /F") which should perform a repair. It will probably require a restart. Do not touch the keyboard during restart.

Format after a virus
get a windows dvd (or a bootable pen drive with windows) and insert in your dvd rom and restart the pc. The dvd will itself boot and then follow the instructions. There will be drive options with a option to format drive. After this install a fresh copy of windows.

Disc not accessible ,error performing in page operation
Go to Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Computer Management-> Storage-> Disk Management. See how many drives are visible. You should see your regular C Drive listed as "Disk 0" and your external hard drive as "Disk 1" (if Windows recognizes it.)
If it's Online, then right-click on Disk 1, and click on "Properties". Then click on the "Tools" tab, then click on the "Check" button.
If Disk 1 is listed as Offline, then right-click on the box that reads "Disk 1", then click "Online". Then, try to do a disk check as I noted above. Post back how it works out .

How do I get the Seagate to back up my files automatically?
In all probability the Seagate came with a proprietary Backup software. Look for it on the drive or on the Seagate website. Install it on your computer and see if you can configure it for a continuous backup. My Western Digital does that.
You can also open the computer maintenance folder (here I am assuming you are using Windows) and configure automatic backups.

Had adjustment on model no. std18000n
Hi Jeff
The head and guides should not need adjusting on this drive. This was a common issue on HP drives but no adjustment should be needed on this model.
If you are having R/W issues then try a cleaning tape and then a brand new data tape.
If that doesn't work then i think replacement is the best option.
These guys have stock if you need one.

You can also look for the STD28000N as the only difference is 3.5 vs 5.25 and you can easily convert between the two.
