Western Digital 500GB My Book Pro-External 500 GB Hard Drive - Page 3 Questions & Answers
How do you fix a external hard drive that will not
Basic Troubleshooting:
-Check all connections (Ethernet, Power, USB, etc)
-Install the appropriate driver for the device, usually included on a CD
-Double Check compatibility with your system (system requirements usually on packaging of product)
-If you haven't rebooted since you set it up, then reboot, this fixes a lot of things
-Try the product on another computer
-Try different cables/ports on the comptuer.
If nothing works, then send it in if it's under warranty or contact a professional service.
My WD ext hard drive will not be accessed by my computer
If the drive is new, you may need to format it. If you already have data on it, then DO NOT format it.
If it is new, you'll right click on the drive icon and click format. After the drive is formatted, you'll be able to open the folder for the drive.
Is my harddrive broken?
Unfortunately it may be that way Jake. The funny sounds may be from the needle on the hdd. Seek out a local computer store and ask them to troubleshoot it. Unfortunately I think it may be broken.
My iomega external hard drive light doesn't come
When you disconnected the hard drive by pulling the USB cable from the computer without using the remove hardware feature it will cause the computer to not recognize the drive. You should be able to power down the drive and then re-boot the computer. After the computer has restarted then reconnect and power up the drive and windows should detect it again. Some of you files on the drive might have been corrupted when this happened so I would go into my computer and run check disk to repair any errors on the drive. If you reboot the computer and the drive still does not respond then you may have caused damage to the drive. You could then try dis-assembling the case for the hard drive and installing it into the computer and see if it works. If it works in the computer then the external hard drive's power supply is defective if it does not the the drive is damaged.
I have a new macbook pro and want to copy files
Hmmn. Far easier, I would think, to share the files via the network (if both machines are on the same network.) Check this link:

Using the MyBook would be faster if there is a LOT of data, though.
What OS are you running on the PC?
WD 500GB MyBook stopped mounting on MacBook Pro
Have you tried it in another computer? I think these kind of problems can sometimes be caused by USB voltage problems, especially if your MBP has an old battery (I believe the battery is used as a power buffer to keep size of transformer down). If that doesn't work, see if you can find someone with the same HDD power supply and try switching that over. Failing that it's data recovery, you may be able to do this yourself by switching the actual hard drive into a new enclosure.
My hardisk 1tb only shows 500gb space
If you're using the original XP version it wasn't able to format the correct size of the hard drives. You need to find a version with Service Pack 2 and boot off that CD in order to format the correct size of the drives. You could also boot off a Vista installation CD and format the correct size.
How to delete corrupted or unreadable folders on
I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most portable / external hard drives (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.
1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply
Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again.
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.
Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select Computer Management.
Now select Disk Management and expand the window.
Your drive should be listed here, if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding.
If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click Tools and then Error Checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then Start.
This will attempt to fix most minor / common errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.
If you drive was listed but did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. When it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you still have problems with the drive you might want to look at other areas.
Is my hard drive broken? Can I some how "reboot" a hard drive?
ok so there are a few things you can try. firstly simply remove the case and see if anything internal is damaged, DO NOT go and start prodding a pulling anything that seems broken, as odds are you will make it work. If there are any internal damage odds are you wont be able to restore any data unless you get it fixed by a professional.
My solution is to take the Hard drive from its housing and put it into your computers dvd drive, inserting all necessary cables eg power supply and the reader cable. dont do this when pc or hard drive are switched on. this has happened to me before and i was able to recover all of my data.
hope this helped.
