Some have a external power cord plug it in to a power point .others are powered up by the USB port. Connect it to a USB port and power it up . The computer will find it as a hard drive and give it a name. Click on my computer and you will find it there. It can be used to save programs on or for back up ECT.

When you back up a copy of your files or images, they are copied to your back up medium, they are not removed from the computer . If you have deleted them they can reinstalled from the back up.

Try turning off your firewall and installing it at that point. Once it is back in the mix turn your firewall back on.

follow these steps:

1. Make sure the computer and external hard drive are powered on.
2. Safely remove the drive from the computer (if possible).
3. Disconnect the external drive's USB or FireWire cable.
4. Disconnect the power supply plug from the external drive.
5. Power off the computer.
6. Disconnect the computer's power supply cord for 60 seconds.
7. Reconnect the computer.
8. Power on the computer.
9. Connect the power supply to the external drive.
10. Connect the drive's USB or FireWire cable and check for detection.

If that does not correct the behavior, and if the drive is also not detected by your computer, the blinking light is probably a symptom of a larger problem. If those steps do not return the drive to correct function, it is very possible, even probable, that the drive has failed and needs to be replaced

I'd suggest you take it to a reliable computer store in your area and see what they can recover. If you have nothing on it you want to save, just replace it.

You will need a program such as Acronis True Image to change the 1000GB drive to a secondary drive if it is the boot drive.

Inability to format doesn't necessarily suggest a firmware issue, if this doesn't solve the issue, the drive may have failed. Let us know how you make out.

Hard wire into your router, enter ip address and then user name and password or factory default. Change password security to none, save settings, cycle power on router. This will clear secutiy on router and now repeat the above steps and enable secutity and assign password.

Is the drive speed 7200 or 5400? MBPs don't like 5400 drives. Suggest getting a faster drive. i have same problem.

Most home video/TV usually support FAT32 format with 32GB MAX size. Like a 32GB USB stick. Some can support larger Hard Disk but only if the HDD is formatted to ExFAT. NTFS formatting will not work.

Please double check your motherboard documentation. I believe your model only comes with IDE interfaces. If so, you can purchase any IDE interface harddisk, which will be OK.

I would have to assume that a "Seagate external memory" is actually a Hard Drive. If so then you need to note what sort of Port or interface connection it is using. USB / Firewire or a direct connection cable of some sort. Note also the size (capacity) of the drive. You have probably loaded it up so full that it can't function. The ideal situation would be to connect this drive to a computer and try and recover your files. You need to know what the drive was formatted for. Check the manual. Was it Fat32, NTFS, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) etc or some proprietary receiver format. Does the dish receiver have the format (erase) utility on board. If the PC or Mac can see the drive on a USB port then you may be able to recover your movies. If not... You can always format the drive or completely erase all data and set it up for use again. Or you can replace the drive with any number of different brands of drive, maybe even with larger capacity. Most drives all use ATA or the newer SATA type connector internally. They are all interchangeable. So WD (WesternDigital) Hitachi, Seagate, etc will all work the same way. (All of them have to be able to plug in to different brands of computers. Mac or PC.
