I have a macbook and

I was going to suggest Recuva but if connecting the drive crashes your system that may not help.

You will probably need data recovery help. This guy does it remotely over the Internet and works off of donations.

Or if you need a data recovery lab this guy is the least expensive.

I have La Cie SAM

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I have a Lacie rugged,

This error happens when the location to where the library is stored is inaccessible. I'm afraid your hard disk has died and everything you had on it is lost.
Last hope attempt: take the hard disk out of its case and put it directly in your Mac. If the disk is still alive it will show up when you boot - use what little life it still has to copy all your files from it then junk it.

Open the external hard drive cover, remove the hard disk inside, and fix it back. Try again and let's see what happens.

If it still does not work, insert the external drive into the computer, feel the hard drive if it spins/vibrate from inside or if it makes a cracking noise.

If it spins/vibrate, it means the hard disk is still working. In that case, you have to get another external drive case/cover.

But if it makes cracking noise, then it means the hard drive is damaged and you need to get another one.

I wish you all the best.

I was reformatting my Lacie rugged on my Mac

Usually stuff like this does not like to be hit on the floor. I'll advice that try 2 loose it and see why it is not firing up, you might be lucky to find the problem, or maybe you leave it for some time, it might come up the next time you plug it.

Take care

Unable to format

Try running a chkdsk on the device (from Instruments -> Check for Errors).

If no errors are founds, it's unlikely that a reformat might help (but you might try. If the device holds no data, you risk nothing).

It could be that the device isn't always getting enough power to go by: try plugging it into another computer, or use an externally powered firewire hub such as the Belkin F5U624eaAP.

Data plug has been pushed into the case

You'd probably be better off with a new external drive case. It takes special gear to solder the wires back to the board although a decent electronics repair shop could do it. Their rates would exceed or come close to the cost of another enclosure.

Is the little hard drive inside about 2 1/2 inches long?

Lacie end of connector pushed into drive

Hello,

Connecting the connector is pretty easy. Each connection has pin numbers assigned to them. Normally, the red wire on your connector attaches to pin 1. This is usually the furthest to the right. Still, all connectors are keyed. That is to say they can only be connected one way and not upside down. If you find the connector does not want to easily attach DO NOT force it, flip it over and try again, it should attach easily now.

If you need an illustration, let me know and yes you can post a photo just to be safe, if you choose.

Regards, and ask for any further clarification you may need. I'm here to fix your problem.

I need to know how to do a factory reset on a lacie 4Big Quadra enterprise.

  1. Disconnect all cables from the device.
  2. Press and hold the "reset" button (located on the rear panel) for about 10 seconds.
  3. Wait for the device to restart and initialize. This may take several minutes.
  4. Reconnect the cables to the device and try accessing it again.
Note: It's recommended to backup all data stored on the device before performing a factory reset, as all data will be lost during the reset process.

Depending on your OS, use your disc utility and see if it has been initialised or not. If not initialise it and then you can format and use it as normal.

My LaCie external drive isn't getting power

U should test for power at the connector that goes into the lacie with a voltmeter to make sure power supply and its wire are OK. If no voltmeter then use a automobile brake or turn signal bulb to see if it has power.

Hello, I have a LaCie D2 525 Super Writemaster. Stopped reading CD, slowly flashing it'sLED. No image on desktop. Eject button doesn't react and paperclip insertion activates eject but tray is stuck.

Pushing in the paperclip should unlock it, but if still jammed, may have to wreck drive by pulling off front of drive drawer thing. Maybe try putty knife to push cd down some of that's holding it from opening.

Just an idea. When you set pass words or any important information write all information in a note book and keep it in a drawer someplace where you will not lose it. When things change write the new ones down and cross out the old ones. I save a lot of head aches that way.

I have a Lacie external drive when the power plug connection on the circuit board broke off. Can the circuit board be repaired or replaced?

Replace perhaps, but repair is most difficult. The electronics are miniature and it takes special tools to do repairs.

Can I remove the disc from a LaCie 300770 250 GB drive and try it in another drive? The drive is not working, so I hope the disc is ok.

Two ways this can go. If you are talking about the entire hard drive pulling it out and plugging the whole drive into another pc. Then you're fine If you are talking about disassembling the hard drive and moving the disks inside. This is not something you can do. This is what you will need. 1) a certified clean room surgical grade 2) tape 3) A matching drive/ hd board down to revision number 4) presision screw tools. 5) patience. Or you will need to contact a professional data recover company.
