I am electronicly challenged...I don't know if

MP3 players can only play music files in mp3 file format. You can download mp3 music files from the Internet toyour computer and then copy them to your MP3 player. For your CD collection, you need to convert your CDs tomp3 music files onto your computer or download them from the Internet and thencopy them to your MP3 player after you have connected the USB cable tothe MP3 player and the computer.
You can do this using Windows Media player and Rip the CDs - Media Player willcreate a MP3 music file for each music track. Click on this link for instruction on converting musicfiles to mp3 file format :-

Sony Walkman Mp3 player (NWZ-S618F)

well it should show up under my computer as a lettered drive. But if you goto this link http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=NWZS618F&LOC=3 and select your operating system you can find a firmware update. As well as find software to use. If you update your firmware you should be able to fix this problem from happening in the future. If you are unable to update the firmware due to it still not showing up on the computer.
you may have to reset it to factory setting. this problem was possibly caused if you formatted the device on the computer and deleted its usb PNP settings. Instead of formatting it through the device.
to reset the device back to factory settings you.. 1. press and hold the back/home button in the pause mode until the home menu appears. 2. press the directional buttons to select the settings icon (looks like a suitcase) then press the play/pause button to confirm. 3.press the directional buttons to select the "common settings" and then press the play/pause button to confirm (the list of common settings options will appear) 4. press the directional button to select "reset all settings" and then press play/pause button to confirm.
(the confirmation screen to set back to the factory settings will appear). 5. press the directional button to select "yes" and then press the play/pause button to confirm. ("restored factory settings" will appear)
for reference you can find a copy of the user manual by clicking here.

How to download musice to it.

Just use the manager that came with it ..if they do not supplied a manager and a driver it means that you do not need one ..and it will act just like a memory stick ...So...plug it ..and if the auto-play will not appear ..than you will find it like a removable storage device in my computer folder...Open it and copy /paste the files in the audio folder..
If the auto-play window appear you just choose to open the folder to view files ..and in that folder you can copy the files..
If it has a manager use it to transfer selected files from your computer to the folder;s in the player ..but this is not a must do operation ...Even if it has a manager you will still be able to open it right from the My computer folder and drag or copy files into the suitable folder..(being a multifunction....audio/video and e books...it has folders separately for each ..)
If it came with a driver ..run it first into the computer ..and after that attach the usb cable..

I bought a refurbished insignia

Hi

Flip the MP3 player's "Hold" switch to "Off" if the switch is on. Depending on the MP3 player you own, this switch is likely located at the side or top of the player. Once the switch is off, try to turn the player on.

Let the battery of the MP3 player die. A frozen MP3 player is technically still running, and thus the battery for that player is being drained. Wait until the battery is fully dead before you can unfreeze it

Charge the MP3 player using either a computer (that's turned on) or an electronic MP3 charger. Charging the player's battery may "jolt" the player out of its frozen state. Connect the player to the computer or charger via the player's USB cable. Charge the player for 30 minutes before attempting to turn it on.

Sync the player with the appropriate software program (for example, Windows Media Player) for the MP3 player. Connect the player to the computer as described in the previous step. Open the software program and click the "Sync" tab at the top or side of the program. If necessary, click "Start Sync" underneath the tab. The name of the player appears under the "Sync" tab if the player has synced successfully. Try turning the player on once it has synced with the program.

Press the small "Reset" button on the MP3 player. This hard reset shuts the player down completely. Use a pin, tack or thin nail to press down the very small "Reset" button on the side or back of the MP3 player to reset the player. Then, try to turn the player on.
