Might be temporary lack of communication between lens and body - try cleaning the contacts on both gently with a lint-free cloth and a very little IPA.

The K100D works with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While SDHC cards fit into SD slots, they will not work in devices not designed for SDHC. Apparently your wife's Canon is newer and SDHC-compatible.The K100D is limited to SD cards, which max out at 2GB.

Talking about two camera's my guess is you made a picture with a Pentax K100D and you put it on the memory card in a Sony dsc-hx1.In the manual the Sony tells what sizes of pictures it can display. None of the 4 sizes the Pentax K100D makes, is in that list.Perhaps you don't mean this, please let me know.

Once you haveyour memory card damaged, it is highly recommended to stop further operationson the memory card (e.g. taking new pictures, or delete, format the memorycard). Data recovery software like "Card Recovery" isable to recover the lost pictures in most cases.

First, you need to confirm your memory card can appear as a drive letter in"My Computer", which will allow recovery software to access andrecover the lost photos. You may try to connect your digital camera to yourcomputer, if a new drive letter appears in "My Computer", it is OK.Otherwise, you need to prepare a USB card reader. There are many card readersavailable in market (e.g. SanDisk and Kingston). You can buy one from Amazon orBest Buy.

Then, you may download and install Card Recovery to your computer. Launch itfrom Start Menu -> Programs -> Card Recovery. You select the drive letterof your memory card, and destination folder for save the recovered files. Card Recoverywill scan your memory card and locate the recoverable pictures. The process isquick and easy. Usually it takes less than 15 minutes.

Sounds like, due to age, the batteries aren't able to hold their charge well anymore. I'd suggest picking up a new set of Ni-MH batteries.
