The newer systems do have to have drivers for everything. The best way to do this is to reinstall Vista, it has a hard drive manager built in and you can cut the hard drive in half or cut it as big or as asmall as you want. Then install XP on the second half install a boot up manager and have two systems on one computer, this is how i did mine. I used Vista till I got My Xp running like I wanted and I use Vista very little now.

Try new memory (RAM) or if the device has two memory module install turn the deviice off take one module out turn on

Turn the device off take the second module out replace with the first module

This means your operating system has become corrupt. This most frequently happens as a direct result of bad sectors on your hard drive. I recommend replacing the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system.

I also have a HP Pavillion dv9260 , had the same problem, HP help live said the video board, which is an intergral part of the mother board is bad....burnt out...needed to replace the motherboard and they won't stand behind them...I was out of luck $400.00 to repair and stories are that it won't last long even if you do...so here it sit's basically $2400.00 dollars worth of scrap parts........

Try booting into safe mode. To do this, restart your computer, and before the logo comes up, repeatedly press f8 until a menu appears. Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode." From there you should be able to use your computer. Try running a virus scan before booting up normally again.

Try to unmute from the taskbar control, see if it work. Also try reinstalling sound driver of the system

first unplug the computer then open the case
now look at all connections and make sure that they are all seated really good
locate the power supply cord that hooks to the mother board and disconnect it
now press in on the power button for 30 seconds
now wait 1 minute and reconnect the power supply to the mother board and reconnect the power to the computer and restart you may have to go back into bios and make sure that the hard drive is set to be the master ok

Compaq and Hp are having issues with several models, Go to the HP/Compaqs website, look up your model and see if it is one they are offering free one time repairs on. My friend's dv4 computer was doing same thing, they replaced the motherboard for free, and it took about 2 weeks to get it back.

My thoughts is that you may have had a Microsoft update to which has knocked out your drivers for these features. You may have to go back to HP's Web site and re-load the drivers for these two features.

I had this problem too: Go to http://www.everythingitunes.com/os/windows/2008-01-04/mmkeysdll/ and follow the instructions. It worked like a charm.

There is the possiblity that you are experiencing an overheating issue and the processor is acting up. The only other thing I can think of besides that is malware infection. Get a couple of cans of compressed gas first from an office supply store and use short bursts to clear out dust, hair and other debris from the heatsink grills and vents. Clear out all the compartments including the dvd tray. If you think there could be the possibility of a malware infection go here and get a copy of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Tool. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

When you run this, let it update and perform a quick scan. When it is finished scanning it will ask you to click on show results, it will then show you any and all infections. Click on remove any infections it finds and reboot.

Try doing a check in the device manager for flags.
Remove any flags and remove any external devices.
Reboot the unit in safe mode and see if you get the same error messages.
If so, you can remove your sound and modem drivers in the device manager and reload from restoration disks or partation. Or you can allow windows to reload the drivers after a reboot.
If you are useing VISTA the best way is to type in recovery manager, and choose re-install hardware but you should have removed the audio and modem drivers first.

you have to check the audio controllers from control panel too,, and make sure,, you are well connected to external speakers,, if you have,, or else first make an check with headphones for sound checking,, then you can analyse if it works,, then there internal speakers problem.
