Scanned documents appear too light

The scanner reader is probably bad. Canon calls it a Contact Image Sensor FK2-1377-00
This is moderately hard to install because it is under the glass.

Cannon MF 6550 give a

Hi there.

This problem is caused by a corrupted firmware in the printer. Reflashing the firmware will fix the problem, but unfortunately Canon does not provide a download for the firmware for this model so you would need to take it to a Canon Authorized Service Center to have it reflashed.

Also, you may want to unistall and reinstall the printer driver first. Uninstall the driver from Control Panel then reinstall it again. You can get the driver from here, just make sure that you choose the right operating system of your machine.

Should you wish to contact Canon in the Netherlands, please click on this link.

Thank you!

I can receive faxes but when sending a fax it

I suspect you have some corruption in the machines software and it will need a ram clear.

1) Enter service mode.

Press the operation panel user mode key, 2 key, 8 key and user mode key in this order.

2) Press the operation panel arrow keys to show "TEST MODE."

3) Press the OK key.

To exit test mode, press the user mode key to return to standby mode.

Scroll down to Clear and then to All. enter and the machine will reinitialise and remove all exisiting data. So it will be as it was when new. It will ask you what country you are in so just follow the prompts and all should be well.

If you use a wireless USB print server like this . Keep in mind that you may not get all functions such as scanning to work but it will allow for printing for sure. If the scanning works consider it a bonus.

Check paper error persists despite no paper in

I had one of these printers claiming there was a paper jam, when there wasn't. As others have suggested, three hard slaps above the paper tray, and hey presto, it works.(This seems to be the resolution to all problems. It will probably refill the cartridge too ... hmmm)

I have seen this fault before on the 6550. It for some reason it thinks you are updating the firmware.
I suspect you have lost the firmware in the scnt board. You will need to download it from canon's site and follow the instructions to update the firmware. It may just work. If not then the scnt board is screwed and will need replacing.

WHEN RESETING PRINTER IT PRINTS BLANKS AND WE ARE

After you reinstall the toner cartridge does it print? If it remains blank you may have a stuck laser shutter. The toner cartridge needs to open the laser shutter when it is installed and sometimes the mechanism gets off kilter and needs to be straightened out.

My canon ImageClass MF6550 only make blank copies

I have copy and pasted this solution from another question I answered from a person with the same issue. Several people have reposnded that this solution helped them very much.
This is either your toner cartridge or more likely the plastic arm that opens the laser shutter is broken. When you insert a toner and close the access door, there is a plastic arm that opens the laser shutter. If this shutter does not open it blocks the laser and results in blank copies. If the arm is broken you CAN open the laser shutter manually and block it open. What you need to do it open the cartridge access door, remove the cartridge and look for a 1/2 inch wide slot running from left to right in the metal frame that is in the back upper section where the cartridge goes. The plastic arm that operates the black plastic shutter is on the right side. If broken you can manually lift up the shutter and "block" it open using something like a folded up scrap of paper. I know it sounds strange but I have used this repair on several of my customers machines and they have all worked fine since. If you can not find or effect the repair yourself at least you will know where to point the service person when they come out to look at it.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.
