MFC-5460CN printer, asking for ink, replaced cartridges, now still saying no ink and replace cartridge...

Main problem with Inkjet Printer cartridge is, ink gets dry after no use for long time. In your case, your cartridge provider might be given you out dated cartridge or if not, there may be technical problem with your printer.

Hello I am trying to

You could try this site again:

http://www.brother-usa.com/downloads/default.aspx?PGID=5&R3ModelID=MFC5460CN

If no luck there (and they usually help for no charge) then you can somewhat of a risk and look for the software on another site but check the site out to make sure it is not a virus site. Here is a site that has NOT been checked out so you coul d do some research to see if it is a site with problems.

Thanks for asking.................................Pete

Where do the ink cartriges on a brother mfc 5460cn

Your machine is equipped with an ink dot

counter. The ink dot counter automatically

monitors the level of ink in each of the 4

cartridges. When the machine detects an ink

cartridge is running out of ink, the machine

will tell you with a message on the LCD.

The LCD will tell you which ink cartridge is low

or needs replacing. Be sure to follow the LCD

prompts to replace the ink cartridges in the

correct order.

Even though the machine tells you that an ink

cartridge is empty, there will be a small

amount of ink left in the ink cartridge. It is

necessary to keep some ink in the ink

cartridge to prevent air from drying out and

damaging the print head assembly.

a Open the ink cartridge cover.

If one or more ink cartridges are empty,

for example Black, the LCD shows

Ink Empty Black and

Replace Ink.

b Pull the lock release lever down and

take out the ink cartridge for the color
shown on the LCD.

c Open the new ink cartridge bag for the

color shown on the LCD, and then take

out the ink cartridge.
d Remove the protective yellow cap (1).

Note

If the protective yellow caps come off

when you open the bag, the cartridge will

not be damaged.

e Each color has its own correct position.

Insert the ink cartridge in the direction of

the arrow on the label.

f Lift each lock release lever and push it

until it clicks, and then close the ink

cartridge cover.

g If you replaced an ink cartridge, the LCD

may ask you to verify that it was a brand

new one. (For example,

Did You Change Blck?) For each

new cartridge you installed, press 1

(Yes) to automatically reset the ink dot

counter for that color. If the ink cartridge

you installed is not a brand new one, be

sure to press 2 (No).

If you wait until the LCD shows

Near Empty and Ink Empty, the
machine will automatically.

Says unable to print 4f,

This is a print head failure of some type. Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord and lift up the scanner unit. Check for any paper or foreign object. See if you can slide the printhead and check under it. If the printhead will not move easily, do not force it. If the printhead is all the way to the right, you will not be able to move it. Use a flashlight to check for any foreign objects or paper scraps soaked with ink. Remove any foreign stuff that you find.

Error 46,the ink absorber pad is full.

first, try to establish if this really is full absorbent pad, remove power cable from the back, wait 20sec, press menu/set key, insert power mains - in most brother printer/faxes this will display machine error code. if this is code 46, you are on the money, your absorbent pad is full (not necessarily, only counter is showing it as such in most cases).

we will asssume that counter is showing full and therefore reset it again to zero:

    1. after machine code is displayed, key in "80",
    2. go down with arrow key till you find "purge counter"
    3. type "2783" this should set counter to "0"
    4. press "stop/exit"
    5. press "9" twice
    6. remove cartridges from craddle
    7. remove power cord
    8. insert power cord back
    9. switch on printer
    10. insert cartridges back

if that do not work, then maybe really you need to replace absorbent sponge... it is done under warranty and if not technician in service centre.

if you want to do it yourself, remove cartridges, remove fron cover and on the right hand you will have "offending" sponge. either clean it (absorbent, lint free tissue is fine to remove excess first, then few drop of water and repeat draining process with tissue several time, at least till "cake" from the top is removed. best of course will be to replace the sponge with new one.

after that you still need to reset counter. in another way - follow steps...

I've seen this error when there was a small piece of paper blocking the gear around the print head. turn off the machine and see if you can find anything blocking it, if you do remove the obstruction and power it up. if you don't find anything the could be a problem with the head or the motor driving it
