I can think of some actions to play with (in case you haven't already taken them, that is):
1) on your phone, go to 'Start > Settings > Connections tab > USB to PC' and toggle the 'Enable advanced network fucntionality' checkbox, i.e. it it is checked, uncheck it; otherwise, check it. Try to connect. Then, restore that setting to its original value and try again;
2) For security reasons, backup your PIM first (you could just copy file 'pim.vol' on the root of your phone to your SD card, to be copied back to the rooot of your device later). Then, delete the sync partnership, both on your phone and your PC. and try to set it up all over again; 3) You could try to uninstall and reinstall WMDC on your computer.

The two software items which you get updates are the 'Windows MobileOS' and the 'Quck GPS', if your have subscribed to GPRS from your GSM service provider. The QuickGPS update can be obtained after pressing the left-bottom key (or Program>QuickGPS) and follow instructions as displayed on your 3300. The other update is from Settings>system>WindowsUpdate

OPEN THE MOBILE IT IS WRITTEN ON THE PROCESSOR

If your phone displays the 'Insert simcard' then your phone is currently locked to particular network. You need to unlock to use it with other network.
There can be many ways to Unlock your phone. As far as i know unlocking by codes is the simple and safe way. I will suggest the website Unlock-zone.com which is doing good service and they were recommended highly in the cell phone forums.
I used them to unlock my cell phone. contacted them and within 30 mins i had my unlock code and my phone was unlocked.
