you can not but perhaps you can try putting a kitchen knife in there to hold it open partially . I had a friend do that and then had to have the motor that controls it replaced by a service tech

I would think that the part he is ordering would be the main control board otherwise known as the jazz board. They commonly fail but seldom lose the display and usually just stop defrosting the unit. This can be verified by listening closely, and setting the control to zero or the off position and you will still hear the compressor running. Reach up and smack the control and it will go off. part # is WPW10503278 and the only thing I can think of is that he would be ordering a sensor as well. The third part is a mystery to me so update and let us know please!

The problem you describe it probably the starting kit of the compressor. You have not mention how old is the fridge so we consider that is rather new and the compressor is not possible to fail.

If you have a multi- meter you can check the compressor to see if the windings are ok.

**First, Unplug the fridge**

Remove the panel at the back down at the bottom. This should gain you access to the compressor. On the side of the compressor will be the start relay/overload assembly such as this image...it may be enclosed in a black plastic cover as well.

Pull off the relay & overload and you'll see 3 pins in the form of a triangle...

With a meter measure between any 2 pins at one time, going between each pin with one remaining on a "common" pin.

You'll want 3 measurement's, similar to this example- 6ohms, 3ohms, and 9ohms.

On some meters you may simply get a reading of "0" ohms, as long as the needle moves off of "infinity" which would indicate an "open" winding = not good !

If following that, the readings are good, you need to replace the compressor starting kit which is the part no 10 to the compressor parts diagram.

yes.. costs is about $100.00 for a gasket (bought from an appliance store- add 4-6 hours of frustration trying to get the [email protected]#$%^&* gasket to seat flat against the door frame.. Then call the appliance store.. probably about another 75-100$ to have them do it..

Hi,
The presence of the oil tells my that you have a refrigerant leak in the coil....
The leak will need to be found, fixed, and the system recharged....

You will need to find a professional to do this but make sure that you get a complete price and a promise that it will be fixed with a warranty before giving the go ahead...

Hello Dennis;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service technician.

You did not provide a model number. So, I am going to speak in general. It sounds like you have a bad or stuck contact switch. Or, you ice dispenser handle is broken and activating the dispenser.

You contact switch will look like the following:

25331098-tf0pl124dzd5m1czyqgpxhkh-4-0.jpg

There are two slots on the bottom of the dispenser frame for a flat head screw driver. Pop the bottom out. The rest of the frame is held by plastic tabs. Push in the sides to remove the frame.

Ground yourself by touching something that is steal. Static electricity will knock out a board. Remove the board. You will see the contact switch.

Send me the model number and I can be more specific.

Go into the following web site and put in your model number for diagrams and the part number.

Check the plastic drainage tray atop the coils at the bottom underneath. You probably will find a smelly stew waiting to be drained into the sink. Follow up by scrubbing the tray clean.

That can be two things.

1. Condensation

2. The evaporator is in there behind the grill with a small fan. It freezes up and has a defrost which causes water. That water runs into a drain, your drain is blocked or the fan isn't working.

28 years old, you are due for a new one.

This appears to be a reference to the defrosting component of a Amana freezer. Let's just assume that it is not a problem with the freezer door seals. (If the seal is not a tight seal when the door is closed, you have melting occurring and the the freezer trying to compensate by refreezing, yielding a lot of icing in the compartment. This is what happens if you over stuff the freezer and the freezer door does not quite close firmly, as well.)

The Amana defrost thermostat might be defective or have become dislodged for some reason. If defective, it would require replacement. But let's say it is not defective. The defroster didn't work when there was too much ice buildup. This could cause the molex connector in the thermostat to contract, breaking the connect activating it. One user "fixed" this problem by putting aluminum foil inside the molex connector.

If the theromostate became dislodged from its "attachment point", one would need to know the model of the freezer know where that point was. https://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/threads/amana-defrost-thermostat-installation-location.27405/

There are videos describing replacement of the thermostat in some Amana's. You can find such on YouTube. I just can't promise that replacement would fix the problem.

Check first that there is no leak coming through your gasket a good way is stick a flashlight inside your freezer turn out the lights if you see and beam or light the seal is cracked or must be replaced the check your coils where Freon is supplied if there not cold you must to a pressure test while adding Freon also check for leaks by spraying water on your coils . It's a matter of mathematical elimination also check thermostat if your Amana is under 10 years old look for the fault codes and get someone that can read what faults are being detected

Probable failure. A common problem with icemakers.
