Repalce your M board

dells usually go full blast on power up then slow down to normal,sounds like fan is not responding to slow down signal i would try replacing fan, its got to be a dell fan

This is a known issue with this system. If you open the case, you will most likely find swollen capacitors. I have replaced the motherboard on so many of these computers because it is a design flaw from Dell. Dell had recalled these computers a while ago to replace the motherboard, but it may be too late now. Unfortunately you will need a new motherboard for this computer.

These jumpers are almost always located close to the CMOS battery or close the PSU power connector. If you open the unit up and remove the drives to see the board, it'll be either green or blue and it'll say PSWD right beside it. Remove it, power on wait for the Password Clear message....done.

For the Optiplex 320, a flashing amber light with no sound indication can mean 3 things.

1) Your power supply has failed

2) Your motherboard failed, most likely from a bad capacitor.

3) The front panel board (where the power button is located) is faulty or not connected properly.

I've worked with 10's of 1000's of Dell Optiplex's over the past 8 years and the flashing amber light is well known as a tell-tail sign of one of those three failure. Always start your trouble shoot with a PSU tester, then inspect the motherboard for domed or split/leaking capacitors...then on to the front panel which would require another panel and ribbon from the same model.

100% motherboard issue guys. The dude above that said flash the new bios should realize that when you CANNOT post a machine you CANNOT flash the bios unless the bios chip is removable and you have another machine to flash it with. The only fix for this is a new motherboard.

You should attach two hard drives on primary ide. Set both jumpers to cable select ( or one on end is master, middle one is slave). The one at the end of the cable is where your o/s should be. You could try putting the third on seconday, along with your dvd rom.

in general heat sinks are not soldered on, they usually have pins and springs, or some other mechanism for holding them in place. A lot of times there is some sort of thermal compound that helps to transfer heat to the heat sink from whatever it is helping to cool. you might want to remove the old thermal compound and replace it with new thermal compound and then replace the heat sink with whatever fastening mechanism it was originally held in place by.
