My Bissell ProHeat Carpet Steam Cleaner (Model 7920) worked great for 6 months. After that, it would occasionally not spray solution/water when I pressed the trigger for spray when cleaning. I would take the water canister out, check the bladder & gasket & connections where the container met up with the base of the machine to make sure there was a connection. Then, it would spray again for a while. Now, I cannot get it to spray at all. The vacuum/suction function works, just not the trigger/spray.

The problem was a clogged heating unit which is located in the lower handle. There are two clear hoses going up the inside of the left leg of the lower handle that go to the heater and to the in-line water switch all within the lower handle. I unplugged the metal heating unit water lines and electrical connections (label the connections as you take them apart if you have a hard time remembering things...there were seven connection in all be it water and/or electrical). Removed the heat unit out and then removed the 6 screws holding the heater cover. Inside was a white powdery pasty debris (lime deposit ?) and the water path was clearly blocked in four different places. I cleansed the water trough with a little water and soft toothbrush and several toothpicks then reassembled. If you need new washers go to Orchard or ACE hardware. Take the old rubber washers(they are red) with you for comparison. I didn't need new washers...I just gently cleansed them. I immediately ran clear water through the machine and actually cleaned the carpet with a water rinse only. Will go back and finish the carpet the right way tomorrow. I had only used my machine three times before this happend over a three year period. A friend told me to always rinse it two maybe three times with clear water after using it and before storage. This took me exactly 42 minutes to disassembly and reassemble. Cost savings is several hundred dollars since I have a 5 bdrm house and would need a professional cleaner to do the small dirty traffic lanes all around the house.

bissell won't spray water
Posted by jules0173 on
Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn't squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can't spray, just re-fasten it down.

My Bissell Proheat, Protech wet vaccum wont spray water. This is the second time its happened. The first time, took it to a service repair man..
The engine works fine.. took it apart to see if water lines were clogged..
doesn't appear so. Its too costly to take it for professional repairs..yet seems such a shame to put the machine in a landfill.
All belts are unbroken, tanks in position correctly. The water sprays the first minute its on..then stops.
Pls help..I'm sure there must be a simple solution

The diverter knob appears to be okay but the flap and gasket broke. I have replacement parts on order but how do I get the old flap's arm out and the new flap reconnected to the diverter knob? (Acutally a 7901.)
Posted by tm_engel on
You will have to pull the top cover off, it fits underneath unto the knob. When you see the bottom, you should be able to tell. The arm of the diverter goes thru the hole and then hooks onto the bottom of the knob.
