Phillips 42FD9954 plasma will not turn ON

I have a Phillips 42FD9954/17S and every time I try to turn it on I also get the power red light blinking and sometimes it will try to turn on with a bunch of clicking noises and it will be green for a while then turn red. What I do and its very weird but works, put a blow dryer on hot and blow it under the tv on the side of the power button for about 10 minutes and it will turn on. I took it apart and there is a heat sink that if i put the blow dryer directly onto it on heat it turns on in less than a minute. Can someone tell me how I can fix this heat sink? I cant take it off. I want to put some thermal compound to see if that works. Give it a try I promise it will work. The Red Light has to be on put the heat on it and then press the power button, if you hear it clicking and green then back to red you are almost there. Keep putting heat on it and it will turn on.

Phillips 42FD9954 plasma will not turn ON

If you are experiencing the same proble, you will have to be the one to determine the "value" of the repair.
Personally I dont feel a $400 repair is justified - as that money is better spent toward a new better model with a warranty.
This is not a repair that someone with no technical knowledge of solid state repair should attempt. There are Capacitors inside that, if not discharged properly, hold LETHAL amounts of energy.
I will also tell you - Phillips does not release Service manuals. They do not have "authorized repair centers" like toshiba, samsung, LG etc.
The ability to troubleshoot and repair is solely on the tech doing the repair. Using his knowledge and specialized tools is what the $400 charge is for. The parts will usually come to under $20.

Your particular repair sounds like there is an issue with the power supply board. A simple OUTPUT IC or Cracked Solder joint may be an inexpensive fix.

Pay for a diagnostic, and see if its worth the money to repair.

Thanks for using FixYa - If you have additional concerns or comments, feel free to reply to me first.

Software update does not find data on flash drive

You might try another drive. I have used this method and found no problem. I assume that you turned the tv off, inserted the USB drive and then turned the tv back on.

Flashing green ligt----------intermittent

Many problems with philips can be solved by doing a software update which is done with a flash drive in the USB port. The only problem is your model number dosen't show up on philips web site. You may want to try to email them from their site to ask why your's dosent exist.

It sounds like you have a power supply board that is failing. When components like capacitors are weak they work better as they warm up. They eventually get too weak and wont warm up.

Flashing red light . i

When the led flashes a certain number of times it tells the technician what circuit is at fault causing a problem resulting in total shutdown. There are no secret codes or methods to get your tv back up and running without having it repaired "SORRY". On Philips models a 7 flash window indicates an under voltage within your power supply circuit. This means there's a Op-Amplifier, high wattage resister, Power-IC, Diode, or NPN-PNP transistor that has developed an internal defect and needs to be replaced. Keep in mind that these TV's produce alot of heat and so the components on the circuit board are prone to thermal breakdown over time. I can show how to fix this problem if your willing to cooperate with me and follow some steps.

Your tv will not work again unless its opened and serviced! Period.

Lot of color dots with bars

The TV may have become over-volted from the factory and the voltage settings have to be reduced for the dots to go away.
If you have speakers by the TV it will do the same thing.
You may also have what we call "burn-in" they are ghost-images that appear as bars on your screen
Try Adjust the CONTRAST setting at or below 50%
Most home theater professionals advise that you wash out your screen with your television's anti-burn in calibration after the first 100 hours. You will have to check your owners manual.

My first solution is: Make sure you leave TV unplugged for 4 hours or overnight. You may have to do a couple of resets.

If you get a wide vertical strip it is very rare; it means the horizontal deflection system is weak - but strong enough to produce the high voltage.

I think the full, hard reset will solve your problem. In the worst case, you may have to go into the service mode and readjust some of the settings.

Plasma and lcd screens can't be repaired only replaced at a cost that will exceed the value of your set. You may get very lucky and find a used one with a good panel.

My Plasma TV is in for repairs

If they are an authorized philips service center, they should know by now if parts are available. If the TV was still under warranty when you took it in for service and philips is unable to provide parts for the repair, they should give you another TV.
Good Luck.

Y main board removal

The board is mounted with a sponge-like heat sink material that seems like it is glued down. It is not. You can remove the board by carefully applying a constant lifting force. I believe I grasped the board by the aluminum heatsink so as to not flex and break the board.
