This is quite common of older players. Some only work with DVD+R discs and others with DVD-R discs.
Some player also does not read recordable discs (an early form to try prevent piracy)
Also make sure if recorded on your Recorder, that the disc is finalized before you try to play it on an older player. (See your menu / manual on the recorder for the procedure)
PROGRESSIVE LIGHT WAS SET BY
According to the operating instructions (page 97), Progressive Scan can be cancelled (or turned off) by pressing and holding PAUSE (on the main unit) continuously for 5 - 10 seconds, until the progressive indicator goes out, or turning it off in the setup menu. Your recorder should now be back to normal interlace video output. I recommend that you check your setup menu after this procedure to make sure nothing 'AUTO' is set, that shouldn't be set, and subsequently turning off any function that isn't required.

If RDR-VX515 gives Please Wait message upon disc loading and does not do any thing else then it is problem with optical lens that got stuck mechanically (does not move/ slides on its axis).

Unfortunately you can't do that in Sony players - the region is hard-coded in the firmware and it can't be removed. Even if you manage to obtain a firmware for region 4 all you will obtain is a complete switch from whatever region you're in now to region 4.

Hi and welcome to FixYa
Initially, postback the model number of the Comcast digital adapter and the TV.
Offhand, if the Comcast digital adapter is connected to the Sony through a coaxial patchcord, then the Sony would really have to be set to Ch 4 (or 3). Channel selection is done on the Comcast digital adapter. It is not possible to record one channel while viewing another.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa
There is no apparent on/off button or switch.
The on/off control is part of the upper left corner of the device rather than being on the face of the unit or behind a panel. It was a bit too well disguised for me to see it, but my 11-year-old son, Seth, discovered it all too quickly. The DVD door problem was resolved by returning the out-of-box purchase to the store for one that was operational. With an older TV, though, I have yet to properly connect the VCR/DVD recorder so that it plays or records in conjunction with the TV. There is no coaxial cable I/O on the combination recorder to connect to the back of the set.
