There are several other disk utility programs that will accomplish this as well

From what you say I presume you wish to put it back to when you bought it. If so, boot your computer and go into the Bios, select default settings.
Re boot your computer with your system disc in the DVD drive and when the menu asks whether you want to install a fres system and format, select that.
When your new system is installed, go to the manufacturers web site and down load the drivers for your computer then re boot it.
Install Office and any other periferal software that was supplied with the computer and there you have a system installed bare PC.

When you place your Windows XP Disk in the drive, ensure that as the Notebook starts to boot, the words "Press any key to boot from disc ..." is on the screen and then press any key. If you do not get that option choice, go into the Notebooks BIOS and set first boot option to CD or DVD, then try again.
If the system you have on the Notebook is newer than the verion of XP that you trying to install, the Notebook will default to the newer system. A real pain! so make it boot from the CD not the hard drive with the bios settings.

The first thing to try would be to turn the brightness up on the screen. There should be a FN (or function) key on the keyboard, and an associated key (usually under one of the F keys, such as F6, F7 at the top of the keyboard, or on one of the keys) that has a brightness adjustment for both UP and DOWN (brighter and dimmer). Try holding down the function key and press the key that looks like it would indicate BRIGHTER, usually a circle with some lines coming out of it indicating glowing. I assume you may have already tried this so...
This indicates that the actual LCD / screen on the laptop's back-light has failed. You can try to shut down the computer, make sure it is off and then take out the battery from the bottom of the laptop. Leave it off for a good 30 - 90 seconds and then go ahead and put it back in. Try turning the unit back on. If the screen is still the same you will need to replace the screen, or replace the whole laptop.
Usually screens are quite expensive, and unless you have expertise at installing them, I wouldn't try to do it yourself. Most likely you will want to buy a new machine. The good news is that you can still sell this machine on ebay, just make sure you list it as having the back-light "burned out" or something to that effect.

Find your original sales-receipt, to prove that you are the owner, and contact Compaq, and ask for Technical Support.

i dont see any integrated wireless in this notebooks specs. It was uncommon when these were manufactured. however you could likely find a wireless adapter that would fit in the expansion slot /multiport.
