Awesome! MODE + RESET works!

I woke up this morning and found I had a charger death again. It happened two years ago, and I couldn't remember what I did to fix it then.

I just got off the phone with garmin tech. She helped me solve the problem. Here are the steps.

1. Go to http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00466-00

2. Download "Forerunner 205 Ver. 2.80 as of Nov 12, 2007", unzip it, and browse to the folder you unzip the files to.

3. Make sure your Forerunner is connected to your computer and turn it on. Drag file "048401000280.rgn" and drop it on "Updater.exe". A screen will pop up, select "USB" then click OK. Then wait till the process completes.

4. Go to the website on Step 1 and download "Training Center For Windows Ver. 3.3.4 as of Feb 29, 2008". Install it.

5. Run Training Center. At this point, I am able to send/receive data to my Forerunner.

Hope this helps!

"To power the unit back on, press the "Mode" and "Reset" buttons at the same time. Let go of those two buttons, press the power button, and the unit will turn back on."
If the unit is no longer displaying maps or lap data in the PC downloaded history ....perform a reset (as above) AFTER deleting all the Garmin HISTORY. This is done on the unit by navigating through HISTORY to "DELETE ALL" ---> now perform a soft reset.

Yes you can restore your data from the TC after a hard reset. You have to go thtrough the setup menu like chose which language etc first.
Well I have exactly the same problem as you and a hard reset did not work either ...
Upgrading / downgrading the firmware also did not work.... the thing keeps on switching itself on regardless....
Do you have found out something more in the mean time?

Can it be turn on when the device is attached to the cradle with electric supply?
If so, I think the battey is aged and it cannot be charged to the operating voltage to turn the device on.
A change of battery is required.
I had such a case recently.

Hi sstevens945,

You might want to do a reset to your device to help you address the issue with the mode button that's doing nothing:

1. First, do a soft reset. To do this you have to press the lap & mode buttons at the same time to force the unit to power off.

2. If the soft reset does not resolve the issue then, you may proceed with the hard reset. The hard reset only works if the deice is powered off.

  • Regular Hard Reset - Pressing mode & power buttons at the same time. This will prompt you a message asking you if you want to clear the data.

  • Unprompted Hard Reset - This will just clear the data right away without any prompt. To do this, hold down enter and mode while quickly pressing the power button (do not hold the power button). Continue to hold enter and mode for a few more seconds. You should see the screen barely flicker on when you push power, and then nothing else should happen until you release the enter and mode buttons. After you release the buttons, your unit should power up and go through the initialization screens. Since this can be a difficult sequence to do, it is best to keep trying a few times if it doesn't work at first.

Hope this helps.

Did you install the software correctly? Because such errors appear usually when the update/upgrade is not finisher or was not done in a proper manner.
If possible try to verify the device on another computer (a friend's) to see if the same problem appear.
If the problem persists I'd say you've burned out your battery (hope not the hole Forerunner...!).

Hello,

When you connect the unit to the cradle is there any reaction from the unit? I would try using a different USB port and cord first if this dosent fix your problem the next step would be to obtain a new cradle for your unit. They can be purchased here http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-forerunner-205-305-charging-cradle.html.

Hope this helps!

Hey everyone. Just called Garmin and got it fixed. Sometimes the forerunner goes into power saver mode and needs to be reset

1. Hook up the usb cable and docking station to the computer.
2. Next, hook up your forerunner to the Docking station - It should pop up saying battery charging in progress
3. Leave it all hooked up and Hold the Mode and Lap/Reset Button together for 15 seconds - screen should go blank.
4. Let both go - should pop back up saying battery charging in progress.
5. Let Charge 20 minutes and it should be good to go.

Hope this helps!!!

The battery circuit connects to the main board with spring clips, near the top of the case. If the case is coming open it can cause the unit to spontaneously turn off. These spring clips may also be a little corroded from sweat or water that has leaked into the unit. Try squeezing the top of the unit gently a few times to wiggle the clips inside the case.

If you feel up to it you can open the case, clean and bend the clips, and seal it back up with silicone adhesive.
