The ice build up is the first problem. Take a hair dryer and melt the ice enough to pull the tray out dump it in the sink then you will figure out why this is happened in the first place.
Uneven shapes of ice lack of use or something interfering with the system are all likely issues . But if it makes ice the unit likely is working correctly .
The compressor may be running, but if there's been a refrigerant leak, it will be running very hot. If it's run like that for more than the very shortest instant, the compressor will be burned out and will need replacement... note that repairing the leak and the system being flushed is vital when the compressor is replaced.
