In this computer the video chip (the one that generates the signal) is part of the chipset of the motherboard - the one that joins all the other parts of the pc.

I would first try recovering the computer by pressing f10 as the computer is booting. If the compaq didn't come installed with a recovery partition, or like you said, no recovery discs, then you will either need to find someone who has a windows XP disc, buy an XP disc, or take the comp to the computer shop so they can run the windows xp recovery console.

it's either your monitor is faulty or your display card... the only way to confirm this is to hook your PC to another monitor.. if same problem.. then you need to check your display card inside your CPU.. if you are using intergrated MBO.. then you might need to do some minor troubleshooting..

When you say the video card on the motherboard I guess you are referring to the video graphics port at the rear of the motherboard? In some cases you don't need to disable the video port that is attatched to your motherboard. You can just purchase a new video card and when you insert it, plug your monitor cable into this port and when you start your computer it should be recognised. Just make sure that you match the video card connector to the type of video card slot you have on the motherboard. You will either have an AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) slot or a PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express x16 slot but not both. Before purchasing the video card make sure you look very carefully at the minimum system requirements, it generally should be ok though. If you just want to improve the graphics then a standard card should be adequate. What type of monitor do you have, flat screen or old box (cathode ray tube)? If you have a flat screen then chances are it can accept a high spec card. Monitor and card have to be compatible.

If you need to disable your onboard video port though then you would do this by accessing what's known as Cmos Setup. When you boot up your computer it will tell you which key to press to access setup, it's normally F2 or the delete key. Once you press this you gain access to the settings and you can search for the ability to disable the onboard video port. what are the words written when it in the balck screen mode? if it has an option of safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, safe mode with netwroking, last known good configuration, start windows normally.... you can click any of this using the up and down arrow... you can choose last knoown good configuration... or safe mode.

select the correct operating sytem and then go to the Network drivers. You will need to check whether the ethernet chip on your card is same as the one listed on the HP site- otherwise you may have to go to the card manufacturer site for the drivers.

Try this get ahold of a windows instalation CD put it into the CD-ROM and see what happens. it could be your bios or the HD my not have any information on it.

if the keyboard is usb try with ps2 keyboard.

Hey there mat-rix, the errors reported are configuration related. You can fix this problem by downloading a reference disk from IBM ftp.pc.ibm.com Here you can get pub/refdisks/rf5060a.dsk (this is the image file), and also get pub/utils/ldf.com to write image onto a diskette. Once you get the disk prepared, boot with it, and run setup. If the errors still occur, replace your battery with a new one. and try it all over again. Good Luck!

Well first of all when you say "my cou wont start up" I assume that you're talking about your "computer". Secondly if it is your computer that is having the problem, and it's not booting up, it could be a couple of things. First I would try checking to see if the CMOS battery is dead, the CMOS battery is a silver, flat, round like object usually looks like a watch battery, you may want to replace that. If problem still persists, then you could have a bad power-supply. Take it to a reputable PC repair shop, and have them test the power-supply. My ultimate guess is that it's the power supply that is bad.
