Panasonic VCR model NV-HS900. When I put in cassette the tape is tajken to the head but ejects after a few seconds.
The main record/replay head should be spinning as soon as a tape is pushed into the slot and as the cassette engages with the spindles the sensor that disappears into the cassette will register the presence of a tape and the tape should spool out...
That is what is happening - I am not sure why it ejects. The mechanism is complex and the electronics that support the mechanism similarly so. There might be an electronic fault but a mechanical fault is more likely, especially if the unit hasn't been used for a while. The internals are a riot of rubber belts and wheels, solenoids and clutches and the risk of tape damage is very high if all those things aren't performing as they should and so rather than risk a tape the cassette is spat out when something isn't right.
The guys in the repair shop remove the cover and insert a special cassette that is an ordinary cassette that enough remains to fool the system into operating but the majority has been cut away. This allows them to closely observe the mechanism in action - the first step in finding the problem...
