Do you have an active internet connection. Check you modem, then your pc settings.

Ping yor pc with ping 127.0.0.1. If this fails, your nic is faulty. If pincs successfully, ping the extneral hardware on your lan to test what exactly cannot connect in your LAN.

Sounds like the boot record of the drive may be corrupt. When you runs the XP installation, you'll be given an option to start the Recovery Console. Go ahead and open that, should bring up a command prompt. At the prompt, type "fix mbr" (With the quotes removed). Select Yes or Continue when asked, and go through the repair process, then reboot the system and try installing Windows again.

*Note*
You might want to check first, make sure the jumpers on the hard drive are set to Master, or Cable Select, and make sure the drive is connected as Drive 0 on the Primary IDE channel.
