I bought a new HP

new to you , its very old, and officially retired at HP.com its 14 years old today. yah, old. last one sold at $30(fleabay) what ever OS (windows) it runs its not safe on the internet. windows 2000? or XP? called legacy now. (means zero support at HP and MS) no dell monitor stated, endless kinds over 20 years. made. what makes you think the dell has speakers/ lacking the 3.5mm phone jack on it. did you forget to plug the sound cable in? the hard drive has nothing to do with sound. one can boot to a LINUX CD and play music all day long. a fact. same with booting to USB thumb drive.(linux) why not buy some external speaker, for $10 or at Goodwill(tm) stores. dirt cheap or heck , upgrade to good sounding speaker no monitor can ever do that. well. good luck and next time tell the helper what DELL that is. the model is on the sticker on the back most times.

How do you remove the processor cooling block.

This is a very old machine, close to 10 yrs (approximately). I cannot find a picture of it with the access panel removed so I have to go on gut here. First, the latchings of the CPU heatsink & fan will vary from year to year and even between models. Some computers have the CPU physically riveted to the motherboard and it cannot be removed. If you break the seal between the bottom of the heatsink and the CPU (immediately below it) you will have to clean both sides to remove the thermal grease, re-apply fresh grease and remount it when done. If you have never done this, do you homework first because you can blow the processor if done incorrectly. At best the unit will not power up. Next, I have worked on a lot of these old units that come across my bench and never saw one yet that necessitated the removal of the heatsink to remove the power supply and I have worked on a lot of them. But without a picture it's difficult to give exact advice. The latches all work on basically the same principle: the heatsink mounts on a frame almost touching the CPU; there is usually a cross bracket running across the top, and down to the latches on either side. Usually a screwdriver is used to press down on one side and the "hook" disengages from the frame thus freeing the heatsink and fan assembly. Now you must be careful. Over years the thermal conduction grease dried and hardens, "gluing" the heatsink to the processor; if you just rip it off it may tear the CPU off the mounting frame and damage it. So you have to "work" with it, a slight, gentle "rotation" pressure side to side with a gently pull, and sometimes that doesn't even do it. Then a safety razor blade worked underneath may loosen it enough for removal. It gets dicey. Again, without pictures I am flying blind. I suggest that you may want to go to www.suggest-a-fix.com for more in-depth help, that (free) forum is more suited to this kind of thing than here. I hang out there and can help you further. Wish you the best in your project!

Remove hard drive

Step 1: Use the following steps to open the case:
  1. Unplug all cables except for the power. Write down each cable location if you do not already know where it connects.
  2. Unplug the power cable and with the power cable removed press the Power button on the front of the PC.
  3. Remove the screws on the rear of the PC.c00371492.jpg
  4. Slide both side panels off from the rear of the PC.c00371493.gif
  5. On some cases, it may be necessary to remove the front of the PC so that you can remove the drive cage. If so, press in on the tabs that retain the front cover, there should three to four on each side of the cover and gently pull forward. It helps to have a friend help with this process. Carefully detach any cables that may also be attached to the front cover.c00376513.gif
Step 2: Disconnecting the cables
If you are replacing a drive, use this section to find and unplug the IDE/Serial ATA or power cables. If you are adding an additional drive and the empty bay is part of a removable drive cage, use this section to find and unplug the cable to make the drive cage removal easier. If you are adding an additional drive into an empty drive bay on the chassis, skip this section and go to Step 5 .
  1. Find the hard drive. The hard drive usually sits under the CD and DVD drives and has a thin flat ribbon cable.
  2. Disconnect the IDE or Serial ATA cable and the power cable from the back of the drive. remember where each cable goes. IDE Serial ATA c00378000.jpg c00378001.jpg
c00564485.jpg Step 3: Removing the drive cage On many HP and Compaq PCs, drives are attached to drive cages. Often, the installation and removal instruction for the cages are located next to the drive cage or on the side panel. The following images are some examples of the types of drive cages that come on HP and Compaq PCs. For more detailed information information about a particular chassis, refer to the Hardware and Servicing guide or User Guide for your particular model of PC. Drive cage examples c00378002.gif c00378003.gif c00378004.gif c00378005.gif Step 4: Removing the drive
If the drive is attached to the chassis or drive cage with screws, remove the screws and slide the drive out.If the drive is retained by a plastic latching system, lift the latch to slide the drive out.Set the old drive aside. If the drive is to be re-used, place it in an ESD safe container for storage.

Hi I keep getting this "virtual memory low"

Hi,
OK, follow these steps:

1. Right Click on "My Computer"
2. Then Click on "Properties"
3. Next Click on "Advanced System Settings"
4. A New Window Should Pop Up, & You Should See A Tab Called "Advanced" At The Top (I Think it's the 3rd Tab Along from L to R).

5. You Should Then See A "Performance" Section, Which Should Have A "Settings" Tab Which You Should Click On.

6. Now You Will See A "Performance Options" Window Open Up. This Should Show The "Visual Performance" Settings By Default. However You Need To Select The Tab Next To This Called "Advanced"

7. In This Section You Should See 2 Options, 1 being "Processor Scheduling" and the 2nd (which you want) is Virtual Memory (As Shown Below)

f014db9.jpg

8. Click On The "Settings" Tab, As Shown Above & You Should Then See Something Like Displayed Below:

9. In The Part Highlighted in Green, Make Sure There is a Tick in the Box, If There is, Then Click To Remove it, Then Click it Again So The Tick is Showing in The Box.

10. Press OK, & Agree To All The Changes You Made When Asked To Confirm Them.

Now, You Should Be Ok :-).

My desktop,hp pavilion753n worked fine til a few

sounds like corrupted files or a virus/malware that is preventing you from loading up the OS. If you have a way to scan the hard drive with an external hard drive caddy and another PC I would try that. Or you can simply just reinstall your OS.

Best of luck and have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend!

My HP Pavilion 753n starts to be and then

It is the power supply
In hp the power supply they use does not die on you completely; it will start but not feed the computer.
So change it to generic brand and every thing will work fine.

I have tried to add PCI wireless cards, and a dual

Hello,

One possiblilty is the VGA card may be bad. Try installing just the wireless card and booting your system, if it works install the VGA card. The other option, if you have not done so is to first install the software that came with each card and then install the hardware and reboot.

Good Luck

No sound

Try the device manager in windows to see if there are any devices that are missing drivers or are having problems (or even disabled). To get to the device manager in Windows XP, right click on the My Computer icon and choose properties on the pop-up menu.

Click on the hardware tab and click on Device Manager button. Look for any yellow exclamation points or red x's on any of the devices. Also look for unknown devices.

If there are any of the above, correct these first. If not, look for the entry for sound, video and game controllers. Click on the "+" to expand the folder. If you have the drivers for the sound device you have installed, then you can try removing each of the devices under the sound, video and game controllers section. Reboot the machine and reinstall the drivers for your hardware when the "found new hardware wizard" starts.

HP 753n turns on and seems to start, nothing shows

If it is the video card, then you simply have to swap anoth in.

If your video card is embedded into the mother board, get a new video card of the correct type and plug it into the mother board. There is no way to fix a video card that has gone bad if its embedded into the motherboard, but you can upgrade to a regualr video card.
