A cmos battery retains the settings in the bios. It is a small battery like a watch battery usually a cr2032 battery.

If it is older, you may need to install drivers for the keyboard. alternatively, your keyboard/keyboard socket may be damaged.
Here is a link giving access to the keyboard drivers for your computer. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&lc=en&product=431082

The following site also offers a link to drivers but it is a far better idea to get the driver from the manufacture's site than elsewhere.

I read all the solutions, followed the manufacturers instructions exactly, replaced the cmos battery and nothing solved the problem (blinking light on PSU after a power failure and no startup at all). I had ascertained that the PSU was intact by disconnecting all the PSU connections to drives and motherboard at which time the PSU LED stopped blinking and was constantly on.
Just before throwing my computer away I decided to follow the instructions listed by "guest" to unplug the power to the motherboard and then with the power supply back on to plug the cables back into the motherboard. No only did sparks not fly, but it started up and ran perfectly! Many thanks to "guest."

The first thing I would do is try a different port to plug in the mouse.
Then if that doesn't work, try a different mouse.
You could also do a system restore back to when it worked.

To order HP parts you'll be best off contacting the HP authorized resellers listed on the HP website. You can view the HP website here: http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/part_resellers.aspx?geo_code=NA

Your part may not be available, so you may need to find a 3rd party part by taking the computer to an authorized technician and see if they can find an off-brand replacement.

Here are a few things to try:

1. Make sure the CD/DVD drive is empty.
2. Make sure there are no USB Keys/Flash Drives/Pen Drives plugged into the computer.
3. Reboot the computer after making sure no extra disks or external storage media is plugged in.
4. If you're running Windows XP - attempt to fix the NTLDR error by booting the the OS CD and running the recovery console. Once in the recovery console, type:

Copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

If it asks you to overwrite the files say "y".

5. If the system still fails, then you may need to slave your hard drive to another computer to get your data recovered. After doing this - you may need to reinstall or perform a repair install of the Operating System using the Windows CD.

If the main power light only comes on very briefly then there is a strong chance the power supply is or has failed..

If the fan on the power supply only spins very briefly after it has been switched off for a couple of minutes then that too is an indication of a bad power supply.

Either way that can be easily checked at most computer stores in a matter of seconds. new PSU's are also relatively cheap and obtainable.

If it is the PSU purchase one with a higher rating than your current one.

EG if yours is a 350 watt PSU then go for a 400 watt or higher.

Hope this gives you the information you need

It would be very decent of you to consider the quality of our expert’s answers and judge them accordingly as you pass through FixYa.

Sounds like the Power Supply is bad likes its not able to power on itself. Best thing to do, try a different known good power supply and attach it to the motherboard, if you get the same symptom with the machine not powering on then its a bad motherboard. If the machine does power on then you know your original power supply is bad.

Access http://www.MajorGeeks.com and search for "Everest Home" software.

Download and install this _free_ software.

When you run it, click the 'CPU' tab, and you'll get a full list of what "extensions", such as SSE or SSE2, that are supported by your CPU.

Browse the AMD web-site ( http://www.amd.com ) to look for an Athlon-series CPU that _does_ have the SSE2 extensions. Buy that CPU, and install it into your computer.

Your computer is not POSTing, the best solution is to get warranty support on it.

The other option is to take it to a computer technician and he/she will diagnose the faulty component. They have access to many computer components and can determine the fault by a process of elimination.

Check the power options properly in the control panel.

HP Compaq... | Answered on Jan 12, 2011

check the back of the power supply and make sure the voltage selector is set properly. try to switch it back and forth to the correct voltage. Swap the power cord with the monitor. Switch it on again. If the blinking green still comes up, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds and see how it goes. If this does not work, disconnect all removable items and cables inside the system including power connection and connect them all and test the system again. Hope this helps

Well lets hope nothing fried, What i would recommend to try is to unplug the power chord from the back of the computer and hold in the power button for about 30 Seconds to remove all the power from the board. Then plug the power chord back in and hit the power button and see if the computer starts. Let me know if this works for you. Thanks
