This seems to be a design flaw on the T series. Literally thousands of T series owners have had this problem at some time or the other on their "well-used" camera.
This sounds harsh, and maybe even dangerous, but it's not : use a rubber mallet, or better still, smack the bottom of the camera on smooth hard surface. it fixed my problem.

In today's cameras on off button only give a pulse to processor to switch on.actually camera is on all time technically.only screen is off.Your problem may be flex connection to main board has failed. The group connector for on off, click, Tele, wide, all together forms one connector. Whole part to be replaced by camera technician to save your camera.

Why would you do that? If the camera is not working perfect, you won't be able to put in any firmware. Updates only can be done when the camera is working perfect. Updates only try to change little flaws i the camera. Most of the time only the professional camera and camera's with interchangeable lenses get updates, to make lens corrections possible. For the H5 Sony never released a firmware update.

This can happen when you use a battery that is almost without charge. Please remove the battery and charge it, before placing it back. Then be careful not to touch the lens, till the camera has a chance to retract it.
After you place the battery the lens should retract.
If the battery is really charged. You should not think it is charged, because you had it on the charger till the light indicated battery full.
There is also a chance you stopped the lens while it was coming out. A sensor detected this. To avoid damage to the lens construction, the camera switched off automatically. Also remove the battery and after a few seconds replace the battery and switch on the camera. Careful you don't touch the lens again.

Possible censor fault but it could be worse if the flash was not working at all.

I had this same problem with my sony dsc-h5 camera and just "put up with it" for over a year. I saw several sites that had links to purchase a new part to fix the probmlem, but the part costs around $70.00 and it is prone to fail again due to the fact that there is a design flaw in the actual part. Then I ran across this site that had loads of photos and very clear instructions (although the english translation was a little rough, but still very clear) on how to fix the actual part that has failed so that it won't fail again.
If you have a little nerve and some patience, go to this site and follow the instructions. I did and am not sorry at all!
