E176FP 17" LCD Monitor: my computer will come on but the monitor won't...

Here is what you need to do to know if your monitor is defective. Plug the power cord of the monitor. Turn on the monitor. If the monitor display image for a second and then black out then the monitor is OK. If not you will need to replace it.
If the monitor is OK.. look for other possible problem. Next to it aside from checking the cable (connecting your video card to the monitor) the one to check is the video card.. the signal from the cpu will pass through the video card to your monitor. If no reaction to the monitor then its the video card.

Regarding dell 17'' lcd Model 1704FPTt

You should use good caps such as PANASONIC FM or FC series from DIGIKEY because they are LOW ESR type, 105C rating, and high ripple current handling. If you put in general purpose caps, they may last only weeks or few months.

The screen on my monitor is too large to be seen.

For best picture, you need to set your PC video resolution to 1280x1024, 60Hz
Right click on desk top to bring up the display properties, select Setting tab to set the resolution, make sure you do have correct video card driver installed in your PC otherwise you may not be able to set the resolution you want.

No signal

this is most likely a problem with your graphics card or port if the computer may have been jostled or nudged
the graphics card could have been knocked out of ts slot try to make sure the card itself is seated properly and than to be sure its the monitor attempt to hook another monitor up to the computer if it works its the monitor if not its the graphics card and would require a technician to attend to it most likely

hope this helped
please leave feedback
thanks

How to adjust stand

I believe you are having the base locked in the "down" position. There is a button on the back that releases the height. You must put down pressure on the screen as you press the button. Then release the down pressure and the screen should rise.

Monitor goes dark

If the power light turns yellow, there is no signal being received by the monitor from your computer's graphics card. The screen will shut off (go into idle mode), which is a low-power state, that saves energy. Check that the cable on the back of your computer is plugged into the right graphics card (many PCs come with more than one, these days). There may be one built into the computer's mainboard, and another one may be on a separate graphics card located somewhere else on the machine. Only one of these will work on startup. If one doesn't work, try the other.

Monitor enters sleep mode before starting up

I will assume that it does the same with other PC as well.
Most common failure in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what goes wrong: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Monitor is on but won't show anything al iget is

You need to open it up and check the ribbon cabel between the LCD panel and the logic board first, then check to see if you do have 5vdc on the logic board feeding the panel, also look at the rest of the caps.
See example of failed Dell and other monitors here to get some ideas.

I always replace as a set, there are 8 large caps by the heat sink (for the 5v logic and 12-18v back light circuits) and 2 more large caps by the inverter transformers as shown in the pictures: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Dell%201704FPT/

Dell 17'' lcd Model 1704FPTt Purchased s/hand.

Hi, sorry to hear you didn't prevail, i have been doing this for over 30 years and some still stump me... But you see, just changing the capacitors well seldom permanently "Fix" anything for very long. You see, those "Blown Capacitors" were a "SYMPTOM" and are a "RESULT" of some other problem, seldom these days for capacitors fault, Unless, they are overheated. To spontaneously fail. The thing that "Kills" Capacitors, is AC Ripple/Voltage, and Over-voltage. So you see you MUST first find why those conditions exist before you can even begin to replace anything Capacitors included. So as ALWAYS the first place we start is at the Power Supply, now you make sure those voltages are correct. and if they aren't find out what not, and what is causing the problem. Then, in that way you can isolate the fault and fix the cause at the same time. That way it is "Fixed" and not symptomatically treated. Also it is nearly impossible to do anything without a service manual, you MUST try to get one of those, they will also help you identify exactly what is wrong and where to look and what to do.

How do i adjust the stand so that the monitor is

Here's the manual for your monitor.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/E176FP/En/index.htm

If you got it with the stand it usually comes with, I'm afraid the height is not adjustable. The screen can tilt toward you and away from you, but that's all.

Sorry I don't have better news!

Monitor goes blank less than a second after turning on.

Hi Abbie, Sounds like the back light inverter board is bad. It's a very common problem. LCD's use four small cold compact fluorescent bulbs to back light the display. (thats what gives the LCD it's brightness allowing you to see it) The inverter board runs these lights and when they go bad they will typically show symptoms like you have or the monitor power light comes on and you have either no display or a very dim display. If you ever have one that has no display but the power light is on you can check by shining a flashlight directly into the LCD from the front (right into the screen) if you can see an image then it's either the inverter board (most likely) or the CCFL bulbs have gone bad. The inverter board and CCFL's are replaceable. Good Luck, El Duderino
