Installing software for my Sony Handycam DCR-HC96

Option 1:

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

(Applicable for Vista Operating System Only.)

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.

Refer this Link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

NOTE: As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire interface.

Option 2:

(Applicable for Windows XP Operating System only):

If you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software disk with the Computer.

Check this Link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C222820

If you do not have the supplied Software disk then I suggest that you use the i.LINK cable to transfer the video.

Or you can purchase the software disk from this link:

https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/productSearch.do?searchOperation=partSearch&searchText=266675501

NOTE: Since the original supplied software is not available for free download now.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

When i put it on

This is due to the fact that the safety tab on the tape is not present or is switched to lock . This is to prevent accidental recording on the tape. However if you had tried with a new tape and the fault seems to come then the fault can be that the trigger switch on this detector circuit is shorted or is accidently pressed to be ON. You can remove the tape cover and check this switch , if not there is fault on the controller section .

I cannot seem to upload

You should not need additional drivers if you have Windows Movie Maker on your machine, it's standard kit for Vista.
Connect with a firewire cable and open WMM and capture from the tape. Firewire is also known as iLink or IEEE1394a.

I cant transfer my videos

You don't say what type of connection you are trying to use. This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. The way it works on my computer, the camera is controlled by the computer software through the Firewire cable. Confusingly, Sony call Firewire "i.Link".

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card. If you have a MAC, you may already have a port.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My camera came with the correct lead.

I have DCR-HC 36E and

Hi,

This solution is only applicable for the selected camcorder models. You can follow the steps mentioned below for the DCRHC36 models.

  • Turn on the computer.
  • On the computer, install the USB driver from the CD-ROM supplied with the camcorder.

Only the USB driver included on the supplied CD-ROM will properly enable the camcorder for USB streaming. The USB Streaming Driver can only be installed from the supplied Software CD.

  • Turn the camcorder on to the PLAY/EDIT mode.
  • Turn on the USB streaming feature in the camcorder menu. P-MENUPICT.APPLI.MenuUSB SELECTSTREAM
  • Connect the USB cable to the camcorder.
  • Connect the other end of the USB cable to the computer.
  • Cue the video to the beginning of the video footage to be transferred.
  • Start the video capture software on the computer. You can try Software like Windows Movie Maker

o NOTE: The computer must have compatible video capture software to complete this procedure. Many video editing software applications include a capture function. If you have video editing software, you might not need a separate video capture application.

  • Begin playing the recorded video in the camcorder.
  • Begin importing the recorded video with the capture software.

Good Luck

The tape door will not close.

Tape mechanism problems are quite complicated but they can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be diagnosed by a qualified service technician.
