You need to adjust the mixer speeds:

Remove the screw holding the End Cover and locate the three screws from the Control Plate.
All three (2 top left and right, and 1 bottom) must be adjusted. Make sure that the Control
Plate is not damaged in any way, contacts are not charred or burnt,etc...

1. Loosen the lock nuts enough & Turn the 2 top screws clockwise until they cannot be turned
anymore. Leave the bottom screw alone for now.
2. Use a dab of white paint or paper whiteout to mark the positions of the Phillips screws.
3. Plug in your mixer and Set the speed selector to "Stir".
4. Turn each top screw One full turn couterclockwise (alternating between Left and Right)
Keep making one full turn at the time (for both left and right) until the motor starts running.
5. Put your hand near the Agitator shaft and allow it to brush your finger slightly. Use your
watch or clock and start counting the number of times the shaft touches your finger in
60 seconds. The correct count should be 60 RPM (Rounds Per Minute). If it is less
or more than 60, give each screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise or clockwise and start counting
again. Now tighten both lock nuts.
6. Set the speed selector to "6" and turn the bottom screw either clockwise or counterclockwise
to achieve a speed of 180 RPM.

For your reference, the planetary RPM's for the 5-qt. tilt-head Artisan Stand Mixer are as follows:
Stir speed - 60
Speed 2 - 95
Speed 4 - 135
Speed 6 - 180
Speed 8 - 225
Speed 10 - 280

Hi, first The Kitchen Aid Ice Cream Maker is a handy attachment that works with the home model of any Kitchen Aid stand mixer..
you will need to check and see if it will fit into it and if the ice cream attachment is the same type and part that will work with it..

Don't know for sure since I don't have the specs if another brand can work for all brand.
However, I would assume attachments are NOT interchangeable..

Hope it help..

Kitchen Aid Model K5SS.Ran only

Hello oldandnew2,

The problem is in the speed switch, the contacts are closed and not allowign power to go thru it is a common problem with all of the kitchen aid mixer over a period of time the contactors get carbon build up. Take the back off and look at the bottom inside and there should be two little contactors see if the are burnt and try and clean them. If this does not work you will need a new one, post back the the tread and I will locate you one.

Which part do i need

Hello Jovana,

First thing you are going to have to do is take the planetary off and check the key and the gears in the planetary. The parts that you may need to replace are endless as we do not know what may be broke in the unit. More than likely it will be in the planetary of the unit if you get it off and do not find anything post back to this thread and I will get you started on the next step.

Hello Mark,

The problem is at the back of the unit. The speed control (black thing that all of the wires attached) is not functioning properly it has to sets of contactors. You will have to take the back of and play with the contactors. Unplug the unit and adjust the contactors then plug in and try it. You may also want to purchase a new speed control.

The part costs 27.95, part # 1394070 and is located at http://www.repairclinic.com/Kitchenaid-Switch-Parts?z=100&gclid=CKSD5NriuKcCFUVqKgodIE2b_g

Hi, W/D here.
Try this:
1. Lift the mixer head, tilting it back.
2. Locate the large silver screw under the head, where it connects to the base. It will have a slot in it, for a standard slotted screwdriver.
3. Tighten the screw up.

Best regards, --W/D--

Hi, W/D here.

If you raise the head of your mixer, and look under the raised part, you'll see a silver screw head with a slot for a standard bladed screwdriver. Tighten that screw, and that should do it.

It sounds like you may have an issue with either the governor assembly and or the main control. If the speed you are getting is constantly going up an down in RPM then this could indicate that the governor has simply become worn and its resistance is gone. If however you get no speed at all and then all of a sudden you get a high speed then it will most likely be the main control. Part number for the governor assembly is 17830. Part number for the main control is 240904−2. Both are relatively simple and cheap to replace. Hope this helps

Thanks

you can try opening it up and ordering a control board for that particular board, most companies won't sell you what they call an "internal part" due to liability with electrical parts,if you can get to the board you will find the s.c.r//triac/or diac shorted on the board and you need to replaced,it may show burned spots on the board from the component shorting,if you can cross reference the part great, but it may have a company part number and these do not cross reference

Hello KELPIES52. I see you have two postings, with some minor differences. You say purchased an “ice-cream maker attachment” in the US and my first clarification question to you is, did you purchase the KA Ice Cream Maker, Model KICA0W, or some other brand that said it was compatible with KA mixers?
If you did buy a KA ice cream maker, then it should fit all KA models, including yours. If you purchased another brand of ice cream maker, then it may never be truly compatible, and there’s the rub.
First regardless of what brand of ice cream maker you purchased, you should have both your KA mixer’s Parts List manual and both the KA Ice Cream Mixers Parts List and Users Manuals in hand. If you're lacking them, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case use 5KSM150, for you mixer and select the file 5KSM150PSEWH4.pdf (777.26 KB) listed under Parts List (1113) (you can actually choose any file sized 777.26 KB; they are all for the different color UK models) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model. This is a good file to have on hand if you ever decide to troubleshoot and fix your mixer by yourself.
After downloading your mixer’s Parts List manual, enter the KA Ice-Cream maker’s 6 character model number, KICA0W (that’s a zero and not an “O”). Download the Part List manual and then the Use & Care Guide (even if you don’t have a KA ice-cream maker) for your future reference.
If, perchance, you have the KA ice cream maker, turn to page 5 for instructions for mounting the drive assembly onto your tilt head mixer. The KA ice cream maker’s drive is designed to fit over the spring and groove pin (stud) on the agitator shaft.
On the other hand, if your ice cream maker is not a KA model, you can still remove the collar, spring and groove pin if you’d like to give it a try. You will need a punch drive with a smaller diameter than the groove pin, a hammer, steady hands and plenty of patience. Tilt your mixer’s head up and rotate the planetary agitator shaft so that the flush end of the pin with the agitator shaft is facing you (the extended part of the pin is facing away from you). Align your punch drive on the end of the groove pin and give it a good whack; repeat until the pin starts to come out the other side of the agitator shaft. Continue tapping until the pin comes completely free. (Note the groves on the pin as you will need to orient the groove pin the same way when you reassemble the spring and collar on the agitator shaft when you’re finished making ice cream). Once the pin is removed the spring and collar will easily come off and then you can attempt to mount the ice cream maker drive on the agitator shaft. Caveat Emptor! Good luck, I hope this helps. The green light is probably sparks. Does the light eminate from the rear? If so, it sounds like there is an issue with the control plate. Taking the rear off should hopefully help you spot what is wrong with it. I suspect the board has broken or got stuck.

It sounds like something is obstructing it or the lever is bent. You will need to take the head apart to investigate further.
