Panasonic SDR-H40 video images distorted in Media Player

The camera does not write the 16:9 code properly in the mpeg so Windows media player does not recognize it properly. There is a little utility called index.zip that you can download which has a file sdcopy.exe which copies the file from the camera and properly writes the code. Then any current video editing software will recognize it and display it properly. It is also a handy utility that I prefer over the software that came with the camera.

Video cam flip-out screen problem

You're on the right track. Ribbon cables rarely fail from flexing. That's what their made to do, thousands or tens of thousands of times. But maybe one end has slipped part way out of the blade clamp from twisting the display more than 180 degrees. Or there could be some corrosion causing high resistance. I would at least take the case apart enough to inspect the cable and reseat the connections. But write down or video tape the disassembly steps and where each screw goes so you can get it all back together properly. Some brands use identical screws (thanks Sony) and some use a maddening array of different length and different thread pitches (metal vs. plastic threads). If you don't have a service manual, you'll have to experiment to find the proper disassembly steps. Sometimes it's straightforward, sometimes it's like a Rubic's Cube with hidden latches or interlocking pieces.

Cannot Write my video to a DVD

I gave up using my PC to do this for a number of reasons - one was the low resolution of the DVD image. Decided to buy a Sony 359 DVD recorder which does the job like magic. But I am very wary of the reliability of Sony products, Their electronics is advanced but their products would never pass NASA's Quality Control tests for use in a satellite. The viewfinder housing on myy Sony H2 dig camera cracked after I dropped it six inches while it was in a padded bag. Later, it now has another fault - I have to tap the body to stop interference on the shutter image. Playback is OK. Manufacturers of delicate electronic products should publish quality testing results. If a camera can't survive a six inches drop, it is in the UK, legally "Unsatisfactory" as it fails Consumer Standards requirements.

Imagemixer3

Hi, sorry for late answer,

Regarding Nero, sometimes you need an update to manage sound onb certsin files compression format.
If Nero it is not the full version, it won't download updates.

Imagemixer is known to have problems with many DVD RW, try using a software like the following one to get it working: Download the shareware version of CD and DVD Drive Identify Version 1.0

See also this thread on same problem.

If you cannot solve the problem via software you will need to buy a new DVD burner, this is not an expensive part.

Panasonic SDR-H40

Re: importing video from a Panasonic SDR-H40.

I have the same camera, and after spending frustrating time w/ Panasonic, Apple, Crutchfield.com support and clerks in Best Buy, etc...the fact is that the camera is currently not supported by iMovie for automatic import. Having said that, there is a workaround, which has been posted in numerous other forum topics, which is the following:

You will need to convert that format into a DV format that imovie can use.

MPEG Streamclip (http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html) is free and Apple's QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
is about $20.00. They are the tools that you need to download to convert these files.
Once you have done that, export to DV Stream (.dv) and import it into iMovie.

So you download both programs from the websites above. When you connect the camera by its USB2 cable to the Mac, it will come up on the desktop as a hard drive. Open the folder where the video files are kept, and you will see files with both .mod and .moi extensions. Open Streamclip and drag the .mod files into the main window and it will open the video clip. Next, choose Export to DV in the file menu, and export it to whatever folder and with whatever name you want. Finally you can import this .dv file into iMovie.

It's a bit of a pain, but I hope Apple will at some point update iMovie to deal w/ these kinds of camcorders, as they get more popular. Lastly, there are many technical aspects of converting these files, as you'll see in Streamclip. I don't know the ins and outs, but found the 'remove interlacing' gave me a better final video file. You can play w/ the conversion settings and see...
Good luck!

Panasonic PV-GS500

I had the same problem but without the needing cleaning message on my Pana PvGs12, weird as it sounded, I stopped it but left it on and gave it a whack on my palm and then tired playing it again and it fixed it. But I have heard it may also need professional head repair and that it may be out of alignment too? Try switching from doing it in the camera mode and or in the playback mode. I'd also try the reset button.
