Formatted memory card

You cant format means wipe or delete EVERYTHING including files and folders you have to start from scratch. I had to learn the hard way as well.

Screen says change batteries, and then turns off

Are you still using alkaline batteries? If so, alkaline batteries just don't have the power for more than a few pics in a digital camera. Some may have reached their shelf life, and though brand new, may even have problems just powering startup of the camera. Digital cameras for the most part should only be used with rechargeable NiMH batteries. Retailers sell these for around $7 for a package of four (about $15-19 for the batteries with charger). Keep in mind they'll save you big bucks in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance, and may slap yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.

USB device not recognized

There are different causes for this problem. Shutdown your computer then turn it back on. If that does not fix it there may be a USB device driver on the computer that conflicts with the device sort of a Ghost device. Go to the link below for some tips on fixing this problem.

Pictures taking too long, and a lightning bolt symbol appears

Hi, Could you please tell us what camera model this is?
I believe you replaced with new fully charged batteries.
Try changing the memory card. Old defective memory card will delay between shots.
If it still doesnt work, try updating the firmware of the camera.
Hope it helps...

Canon A620 No Picture

First try hitting the DISP button (sorry if this offends, but many people have made this mistake). If this doesn't help, next try resetting the camera. Turn on the camera, and hold the menu button for at least five seconds. Believe reset is also in the menus.

If the above doesn't help, then unfortunately this sounds like your CCD image sensor may have failed. This would then require professional repair. Contact Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON.

E 18 problem

Your A410 problem really sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. Canon would normally fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/canon-digital-cameras-showing-black.html
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819
Unfortunately this is only for applicable cameras A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S200, S230, S330, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110
But you may want to contact canon anyways to see if they will help.
As for your SD500 e18 issue,
The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. Have already fixed several cameras with this problem by using these methods:

No LCD Display

Your LCD is broken.
I'm an Imaging Salesman at Circuit City and I would normally say to get the LCD fixed but that would be a waste of money due to the fact that this model was released in 2004 and you would be better off getting a new camera.

If you are looking for another Canon....
For good quality and "user-friendliness" i would suggest the:

Canon SD1000, SD870, SD750 (Thin, sleek designs that come with rechargable batteries)

For more a more convenient price without loss of quality you might want to check out the Canon PowerShot A560.
(A somewhat large and bulky camera that runs on regular AA batteries)

Good Luck!!

Date and time settings

The date battery needs to be replaced. It is a coin-type battery, CR1220. It fits in a holder that slides out from the bottom of the camera, opposite the side from the battery cover for the regular batteries. When putting the new battery in the holder, the negative side of the battery should be visible. Illustrated instructions are on page 87 of the Advanced User Guide.

Not responding to my laptop

The most common cause associated with the PC not detecting the camera is due to the fact that either the devie drivers have not been installed, or are corrupt. It is important to thoroughly read the Software Installation instruction manual as with some Cameras, the user is required to connect the Camera via the USB cable first, then insert the CD that came with the camera and then install the software and drivers. With other Cameras, the reverse is necessary, eg., you are required to install the software first and then connect the Camera via the USB cable. My experience has convinced me that even though Camera manufacturers recommend one or other of the 2 methods mentioned above, for whatever reason, sometimes the drivers just don't get installed. This may be due to things peculiar to your own pc system or conflicts with other software on your machine which prevent successful installation of the camera software or drivers. If this is the case, then you can access Device Manager in your PC and scroll down to USB Serial Bus Controllers and check to see if the USB and other drivers are installed. In most cases if the software has been installed but the drivers are not, or are corrupt, this will be highlighted in Device Manager with a Large Yellow ? (question mark) From there you have the option to check if the device drivers have been installed and also if the device is reported as working correctly. You may then engage the help of the Hardware Wizard to uninstall the drivers if they are corrupt, or install them if they are missing. Whichever is the case, it is usually necessary to restart your PC so that it can detect the camera when it has rebooted up. To locate Device manager on XP > click on Start > then right click My Computer > next left click Properties from the drop down menu > and then from the Sytem Properties Window which comes up, > left click on the Hardware Tab > then left click on the Device Manager Box and you're there.
