In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD. If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.The main motor will not work in some cases as unless the tracks are read the drive motor will not work with signal from the processor. Also in some cases the central motor base can shift and so the distance to the disc can be more resulting in low detection. You can pull up the spindle to come closer. Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.

Believe it or not, with the Canon XH A1S, the HDMI cable can EASILY fit into the camera whether placed in correctly with the straight edge at the top, or with the straight edge at the bottom. If you insert it the latter way, the camera's internal motherboard will blow when power is applied. DON'T GUESS! Always look carefully to make sure you are inserting it properly. BTW, Canon does NOT mention this anomaly either in their manual or at their website. Learn from my experience!

If your dad's computer includes an SD card slot, it can be compatible with any camera that records to an SD card simply by removing the SD card from the camera and inserting into the computer.

Possible failure in the servo or the loading section or the drive.
Unless the camcorder is opened it is not possible to remove the cd. So you need to access the mechanism to manually remove the cd from the drive. so not use force or pressure but gently check on the drive and rotate the spindle/spiral of the loading motor to release.
This can be relative to a failure of the drive , power or the controller section.
