I started up my kodak 98110 and got service 3.43. What does this means

by ripped, do you mean that the ribbons have come off the hinges or are they torn?
if they are torn, any small cracks or torn edges will not harm much. but if the ribbon is sliced to pieces, they have to be replaced, as you cannot work with torn ribbon. here is a link to the manual with which you can replace the ribbons.
