What is a Lacie for
They were /are used for backing up files so that you have a copy of important stuff in case your computer drive dies with the valuable data on it
I cannot create folders on my external Lacie harddisk
My suggestion would be to copy all the data to another drive temporally. Then reformat the lacie drive using your new computer, install truecrypt, move the data back over. The issue could have to do with the filesystem of your hard drive.
When I plug my Lacie drive into my computer it flashes a message that I need to format my lacie. How do I get it to stop?
If you have not formatted the drive for use previously, you need to format it. However, if you have already done so and it is still flashing, chances are that the drive inside the external enclosure has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If you have stored any data on it that is irreplaceable (such as your only copy of family photos), then before you replace the drive (especially before sending it in for warranty service), you should consider how important that data is to you and whether you wish to spend the money on a reputable data recovery service such as Ontrack (found at
Kroll Ontrack recognized leader in legal technologies and data recovery...). Be aware that such services tend to cost around $1000. Fortunately, if you tell the service what data is most important to you and they are unable to get that (even if they can get everything else), many services will not charge you for said recovery but will provide you with what they were able to recover.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Please specific what OS you are using. Also is the drive internal or external.
How do i recover data from my old LaCie 320gb External Hard Drive?
You MAY POSSIBLY be able to take the raw hard drive out of the case and connect it directly inside a desktop computer; it may be a standard ATA or SATA drive. If you can do that, transfer all the data to another hard drive (internal or external or network) directly.
