How can i install a linksys router without cd?
With a Linksys router, you simple connect the power cord to the router (with nothing else attached to it), wait for it to boot up, which normally takes about 20 seconds, and then you take a paper-clip or pen and press the RESET button in firmly for about 30 seconds, then let go. This will put the router into factory-default mode.
Then, you wait about 30 seconds for the router to boot up again, and then plug the internet cable (from the DSL modem or cable modem) into the WAN port. After that, connect your computer/laptop to one of the LAN ethernet port. Your computer should pick up an IP address of 192.168.1.2 (you don't have to verify this. You should now be able to access the internet.
If you want to change settings on the Linksys router like SSID, wireless security, IP address, DHCP, etc... you just need to open up Internet Explorer and type "192.168.1.1" into the address bar. It'll prompt you for a username and password. Depending on the model and age of your Linksys router, it might be Admin/admin, <blank>/admin, admin/linksys, or admin/password.
My router won't go wireless
You will need to check the wireless settings of the router
is there any computer connected to the router ?

Router set up page is the page where you can check all the wireless settings of the router.Click here
for step by step instructions
Im trying to set up internet for my ipod touch and
Yes, you really need a password for that (either WEP or WPA). You can ask for the password to the one who configured the router. They placed a password for security reasons. In order not all people can access net, only those who knew the password.
I need to secure an unsecure network.
You need to log into the router and go to the wireless settings. The to wireless security. There choose WEP, WPA etc. On the right hand side of the screen is definitions of these methods. Click on more for instructions of how to enable the security measures.
I want to create a secure network password for my wireless router
The steps I'm about to teach you is to create a WPA Personal Network Key to prevent random users from accessing and altering your network.
Go to Start > Run. Type in cmd and press enter. A black box will appear with some text in it. Type in ipconfig and press enter. Some more text will appear. Look for the words Default Gateway. Next to them will be an IP Address. Type this IP address into your browser.
A diolouge box will appear, asking you for a username or password. If you have not configured this already, leave the username field blank and type in the password field admin. THe Linksys router configuration page will display.
Click the tab taht says Wireless. Click the subtab that says Wireless Security. In the drop down box that says security mode, select WPA Personal. Make sure where it says WPA Algorithms, TKIP is selected. In the WPA Shared Key box, type in a password that you are sure you will remember, or write it down. When finished, selected the button that says Save Settings.
Your network is now secure with the key you have made. The default SSID (or network username) is called linksys.
ok, you seem to be going around it the wrong way round, if you are trying to connect to your friends network you would not connect to his pc you would connect to his router, so you cannot use your router to connect to his.
assuming you have a wireless network adapter, which you must have, you simply connect to your friends router via your pc and not your router, you cannot have one router connecting to another, only signal boosters.
when your'e network adapter detects a network, select your'e friends and then enter the passkey when prompted, so turn off your router,as it can only be used for your own network, as it musn't be connected to your modem, or else you wouldnt need to connect to your friends.
If you want to connect to your friends pc for file sharing make sure he has is sharing set up and you both have the same workgroup name e.g. mshome
My setup disc is cracked
As far as I know, the setup wizard for your router is just to help you configure the internet and wireless connection and it won't install any software at your PC. It just needs you PC to run the setup wizard to do those things. An alternative way is to manually configure it via it's web interface which you can access by opening Internet Explorer and type http://192.168.1.1
at your Address bar. That's also useful when you will configure advance setting at your router.
Hope this helps.
WRT54gs' internet link wont come up
Here's a couple of places to get started:-
1. If you're on the internal network, try logging into the router's admin page, and iff you can see link to the cable modem / DSL line "Internet Interface". Try Refreshing DHCP on that interface.
If it's not looking great, or it's not serving out DHCP, do a quick powercycle on the LinkSys and see if that clears it (I would guest you've tried this though!)
2. Check your cable modem / DSL line box and ensure that all its lights are as normal (Without Make / Model etc I can't help you in detail there.
3. Try powering off your cable modem / DSL box and then your link sys. Wait 10 minutes (Yes, that long, there are reasons for that involving the upstream network). Powerup you Cable Modem / Link Sys box, once that looks healthy (Maybe 2 minutes to boot with some models) power up your LinkSys and see how things look then.
If you're still not having luck, unplug the power from the LinkSys again. Press and hold the "Reset" button, keep it pressed, and reapply power. Count to 10 before letting go. Wait a second or two, then press and hold the rest button again for another 10 secs. See how it looks then.
4. If all of the above doesn't help, call up your ISP and ask them to run a diagnostic on your Cable Modem / DSL Modem.
5. If you CAN get to the web page on your LinkSys, and you KNOW the cables are good then you should try putting the original firmware back and see how things go then.
If you're still having issues after all of the above I'd suspect you have faulty hardware.
on the back of the router there is a reset button, use a pen or something similar to hold the button down for 30 seconds, unplug router and plug back in. If its an older linksys model leave the user name blank and password will be admin, newer models user: admin password: admin.
