I'd like to record an on-hold message.
You'll need an aftermarket adapter that senses the voltage shift in the line, triggering a 24/7 music feed. The RCA series don't have a music-on-hold capability. www.skutchelectronics.com is the best hardware solution, or using www.holdtimestudios.com to put a studio package together with hardware.

Have an RCA executive series. the light for the
I have an RCA Executive Line 4-line phone. I was away for a week, and came back to find the speakerphone when I dial out is significantly muffled on some of the lines (people that I am calling complain of noise on the line). If I take it off speaker, the quality on the handpiece is normal. First, I thought it was the batteries, so I replaced them. Didn't change. Is there a reset? Is the phone (base) after less than 1 year defective?

Quick question -- how can I pick up office phone
If your employer allows it, you should be able to retrieve your messages. Here is how I suspect it would work:
  1. You call your office phone number (must be a direct line)
  2. A greeting message invites you to leave a message.
  3. At the beep that indicates the begining of the recording you key in your password .
  4. The answering system (if so programmed) recognizes the code number and sets off reading a few menu options, among which is one that allows you to retrieve your messages.

But these are just speculations, I have no idea if it is implemented in your enterprise phone system. Besides, you may have an extension number, not a direct line.

I suggest you call your number and explore the menu options the caller is offered. If you do not find any that allows you to retrieve messages, that option is probably not implemented.
Maybe you should investigate the possibility to reroute the messages to your home phone. However I remind you that some employers may not like that: All that comes to the company is company property, and rerouting messages may be construed as espionage (industrial spying).

If I were in your boots, I would not let my personal (private) messages (phone, e-mail) to transit through my employer's switchboard or e-mail server.

I would suggest that you ask the phone-system resource person.
