Sansa c140 SanDisk
I had the same problem, first on the mp3 player under settings change the USB setting to MSC. Then plug the mp3 player back into the computer. Open the My Computer icon, right click on the SANSA C140 icon and click format. Make sure it's Fat32 and Quick Format is Not selected. Then click format. This will take a few minutes. When it's done your mp3 player will be just like a usb drive; you're files will be read normally.
* if it's a voice recording you're trying to find, look under music and scroll down to Recordings. If it's not there then perform the above format.
Also it only reads mp3s and pictures (gifs, jpgs). Unfortunately the c140 doesn't play videos :(

Check the Mode of the device.
Settings>Mode or USB.
If you transfer files in one mode, you can only view / manage them in the same mode.
Best of Luck.

Deleting music
It shouldn't make any difference. The device should show up as any other attached storage device and you should be able to delete files or drag files to it as you would to a flash drive.

I can only hear out of one headphone
Hate to tell you this, but most likely the headphone jack on your player is broken. It happens alot. If it's under warranty return it to the store.
I don't believe the jack is user replaceable on this player.
Try inserting the headphone jack only partway and see if you get both sides. Your cheapest solution if it's out of warranty may be to just insert the jack to the point at which you get both sides to work. It's a crappy solution, but it's probably your only hope. It's not a software problem or anything that can be fixed without tearing the player apart.
Sorry for the bad news....
