Check to see if you can reset the electronics of the monitor to factory defaults. If no reset button contact viewsonic for a hidden code to accomplish same. If no results then your monitor is a sick puppy. Just to make sure plugh in another known working monitor to make sure that it is the monitor and not your computer.

If no obvious screws are there then unit has to be carefully pried open.

crt monitor uses.vga port do you any laptops you can plug in and see if monitor actually works ... recently built pc so does that mean you shoved in another graphics card if so does your graphics card also have vga port, if it does try that

I would recommend not to use the screen until the brown area is identified. It might be burning out.
