2001 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 Speedometer wiring

I have a 2001 HD Sportster 1200. I bought this bike 2 weeks ago. The previous owner did some up grades (9.5" pullback risers, straight drag handlebar, etc). After all this work, he didn't want to put the stock speedo back on. Idon't blame him. I bought a new mini speedo from J+P cycles. The new speedo has 2 sets of wires coming out of the back of it(red, black and green) and I can only find one plug under the seat not plugged into anything. The wires one the plug are red, black and white. So, I'm not quite sure how to wire the ******!

The red goes to red, black to black, and green to white. Check out this site http://www.jpcycles.com/instructions/new/5600003.pdf

Brake Light Stays On

The brake light is always on. I checked the light bulb and both filaments are energized. I'm wondering if it's a bad switch or a diagnostics tool to perhaps indicate a brake job is needed?

I just had the same thing. The brake light actuarer in inside the brake lever on the bars. If the lever is worn, the actuator moves aside and the brake light stays on. Remove the brake lever and push the little black switch. If the brake light goes out replace the lever and actuator.

2007 Harley Fatboy Taillight problem.

The tail light on my 2007 Harley Fatboy stopped working tonight. However, the brake light works fine, it comes on whenever the brakes are applied but then the light goes dark when released.

Is the normal light on a different wiring or fuse than the brake lights?

Check to make sure BOTH light filaments are intact. Or try another bulb to double check the situation before wasting to much time on a simple fix.

Electrical Problem 2002 Harley Davidson Roadking police mdl

I'm having an electrical problem with the subject harley. Last year on a ride the bike ran fine until suddenly it stopped as if I turned off the key.No electrical working. After sitting for 2 or 3 minutes I turned on the switch and it started right up. Rode a few more miles and a repeat of this event. At home I checked the battery conections which seemed okay, but I loosened them and tightend them again to be sure. I only rode the bike once or twice with no problems until this year. First trip this year, no problems. Today 10 miles to my brother's house no problem. On the return trip, it shut down again. Then after trying the switch several times, everything lit up and it started up again. 5 miles later a repeat of this scenario. After sitting for a few minutes or so the electric comes back on line and the bike starts. With an intermittent problem like this I don't want to take it to the dealer because it can run fine for miles, and the problem rectifies itself quickly. I'd rather try to trouble shoot it myself if you have some ideas to try when it occurs or things to check before I head out on a ride.
Thanks much for your help!

Your gonna need a voltmeter and a multimeter to trouble shoot this. Invest in a service manual. They have extensive troubleshooting guide

black smoke

My Harley has a little bit of Black Smoke come out of the Exhaust just when I start the bike. Can Somebody please tell me what it could possibly be. Thank You

Change your air filter and clean the blow by tube that crosses the heads and connects to the back side of the air filter. If the tube or the air filter is clogged, then the oil that the blow by removes is going back into the cylinders, causing the black smoke. Also keep in mind that a Harley will blow a little black smoke upon starting as it ages, it's normal.

harley starter motor install instructions

i need instructions on how to re assemble and mount my stater motor and soleniod on my evo softail

Its not a complcated procedure. You'll need to open your primary. You install the jackshaft into the starter after its mounted. Make sure you put plenty of ani seize into the bushing on the outer primary and watch out not to over torue the jackshaft bolt - the spec is 5 lbs.

heres a couple of links that will give you more info. One is for a spyke starter install, but all starters install the same. The other is for a belt drive install which talks some about the starter

Harley Heated Hand Grips not working

There were installed by my local stealer, worked for one year.
I do not have the wiring diagram to check.
Fuse is good - there is continuity to ground when ignition is on.

Any thoughts would be helpful...

The harley heated handgrips are notorious for failing.  Some people have reported finding a loose connection on the ground wire, like they did not crimp the terminal on the end of the wire at the factory.  If they are wired externally of the bars (almost impossible to wire those any other way) then it should be easy to follow the wire down to inside the headlight bucket or in the nacelle or dash, (depending on what model bike) and check the connections.  If both grips quit at the same time then it's probably wiring.  If one quit first, then it may be the grip itself.
If you need to replace them, I would highly recommend not buying the HD brand anymore, and instead choose Polly grip heaters.  They are made for snowmobiles and have a long list of benefits over the HD type: - fits internally in the bar end, so you can use any grips you want - cost $35!!  compared to $250 for HD - easy to install
I have installed over 7 sets in my friends bikes and not one single failure.

harley davidson evo motor wont turn over...just clicks

have a custom motorcycle runing a harley davidson evo engine. had the bike running one day, then went to start it the next day, and the starter just clunks one time, but doesn't turn the engine over. battery is showing full charge (even put it on charer overnight) and is new. connections look good, but when i try to start, wire from start switch to starter gets REALLY hot. like i said, the motor doesn't turn over...just "clunks" one time. the guy that built the bike is 5 hours away and not available to help. any ideas on what i can try?

Pull the spark plugs out and hit the starter. This will make sure that the engine is not locked up. If the starter does not turn the engine, put the bike in first gear and have someone push you, making sure the engine is free. If the engine is OK, your starter is probably jammed and needs replaced. That wire getting hot is a dead giveaway something is locked up tight...starter or engine. If ya have a large hi-performance engine in the bike, chances are your stock starter won't do the job.

Harley hard starting problem

I need some trouble shooting ideas for a hard starting situation with my 95" Twin Cam engine, big bore kit, geared cams, with 62k miles.

The bike used to start on the first try. Now (when the engine is cold), the engine has to turn a few times before it fires.

It's especially bad when the engine is hot. It seems to be compression related, because the starter gear jumps every once and awhile.

Could it be an exhaust leak causing this? If so, how would I prove there is a leak?

highley doubtful on exaust leak causing problem first make sure your battery is up to the task do a load test if that looks good do a draw test on the starter if not there it starts to get ugly that motor came with a torrington bearing on the sprocketshaft as they wear they develop crankshaft runout not a real big issue till your running straight gears on the camshafts which only tolerates .001 runout you could be binding there
