Is it an external or an internal disk-drive?
What have you tried?
What error-messages did you get?

First test your CPU then tast all leads that are attached to your hard drive sounds like a faulty lead of some sorts then
try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
good luck

Making multiple assumptions...

You may want to try and take the bread-board off the back of the drive and try re-seating it to the chassis. Luck being a lady you may have just misaligned one of the pins going to the disk drive platters, but I wouldn't put much faith in this trick as most of these boards are matched up within an n'th of a degree and just short of a nuclear blast could knock them that far out of alignment.

The other would be to find a drive of the exact (or close as humanly possible) drive, take the back off of it and see whether or not that sparks the life back into the drive long enough to get your information off of it. Again, this might be a long shot as well.

Sadly, the only other possibility would be that the read/write heads had jumped off of the platters so far that they may be holding the disks down and no ammount of anything will get them seated back to their proper place. Unless you want to drop between $1200 and $1800 to get the data off without further physical damage to the platters.

Hope it helped, but probably not the exact answer you wanted to hear...

Make SURE you dont' have any data on the drive that is important (or you have a good back up) Click "COmputers" and "manage" you will need to initialize the drive for VIsta to recognize it.

What service pack are you running? Does your bios support the drive?

Hitachi Deskstar... • Answered on Jul 23, 2010

This would be a bios limitation. Formatting wont' fix the issue. Check your bios and see if it supports "lba" . Certain manufacturers offer "Drive overlay" which will allow you to use the space ..
