Make sure that the tread is fully between the tension disks. Hold the thread at the spool and when placing it through the tension assembly pull both ends firmly.

When you increase the tension, pull on the thread while the presser foot lift lever is down and see if it gets harder to pull. If not, the thread is not between the disks or the machine is malfunctioning and must go for repair.

Large loops on the bottom are almost always caused by little or no tension on top.

It could be the tension is not set properly, not working, or thread not working. Below is what I have learned from the past when my friend had the same problem.
You don't need to turn tension all the way up or down, you need to slow turn and test it. Please follow below.

As you turn the dial clockwise, you are increasing the tension. Anticlockwise, decreasing it. The lighter the pressure on the dial the lighter the upper tension is in the fabric. What we are looking for, in a perfect stitch, is one that is interlocked evenly in the middle of the fabric layer
Make sure the tension unit is working. Whatever number your tension dial goes up to, place it at half that, so you are in the middle of the dial. If your dial is un-numbered, turn from lowest to highest tension and judge the halfway point, set the adjustment to that point.
Put a reel of thread on your machine and thread the monster. Finally pull the thread through the needle's eye with the foot raised.

Some fault codes in the White 4400 on screen error messages mean...

E02 Pending Operation
E11 Needle is down (raise needle with handwheel)
E12 Card is missing (re-insert memory card)
E13 Thread break
E14 Presser foot is up (lower presser foot)
E15 Presser foot is down (raise presser foot)
E16 Winder engaged (disengage bobbin winder)
E17 Table movement error
E22 Design too wide
E23 Design too tall
E25 -x limit reached
E26 + xlimit reached
E27 -y limit reached
E28 +y limit reached
E40 Main motor stalled
E41 At beginning of design
E42 At end of design
E43 At first color change
E44 At last color change
E50 Bad pattern selection

If a piece of thread has broke in the tension area, and hung up in there, or some lint is simply covering a sensor... it may be causing that problem.

If you have not had the machine serviced in a few years, now may be the time to do so.

You can also trouble shoot with Viking-White at 800-331-3164 or you might also try 800-446-2333

Hope helps.
