The batteries in my Olympus
First of all, you need to check the quality of the kind of battery you use in the voice recorder as some batteries are not good enough to power up this device for longer hours.
If the battery is original and still gets drained faster than normal. Then it is clear that the recorder kills the cells of the batteries. And the reason it will be doing that is because there is a bridge in the terminals of the recorder.
If the negative and positive of the terminals get bridged, they tend to kill the cells of any battery it comes in contact with faster.
The solution to such problem is simply for you to have the terminal of the voice recorder replaced and it wont kill the cells of the battery in it anymore.
Hope this information helped.

On my Mac I accidentally
Sorry to inform you it has to be sent back to the Authorized Service Center for reloading the Operating Software. The reformat function will only erase all the data and clean up your memory on your recorder for a fresh start, it does not tamper with the OS. And the DSS files are part of the OS.

How do i REALLY erase on my olympus ws-300m?
Suggestion is to format the device to remove all unwanted data permanently.
1 While the recorder is stopped, press the MENU button for 1 second or longer. The menu opens
2 Press the + or – button to chooseSubmenu and then + button to “Format”.
3 Press the OK button. The “Cancel” indicator flashes.
4 Press the + button to choose “Start”.
5 Press the OK button. After the “Data Will Be Cleared” message is on for two seconds, “Cancel” will turn on.
6 Press the + button again to choose “Start”.
7 Press the OK button. Formatting begins and an indicator flashes
on the display.
“Format Done” displays when formatting ends
