Need furnace model number. It sounds like you're looking for a standing pilot. Your furnace might not have one. Very likely to have a spark ignition type system or hot surface igniter.

If you are getting air conditioned air when you are supposed to be getting heat, the compressor is working but the valve that reverses the refrigerant flow for heat to be created could be stuck in the default postion which for a Ruud is air conditioning. There is also a special output on your thermostat to activate the heat cycle and reverse the valve.. Maybe that is not working and the cause of your anomaly.

Check the two wire going to the Condenser unit...make sure there is not a short. Your transformer seems fine.

Yes, you can, but it's extremely detrimental to the unit - the fan will run continuously and the thermal functioning point of the cooling circuit will be way off the recommended range. Use that as a temporary (less than a week) and last resort solution.

First replace the cap for the compressor. then find the cap for the fan. It should be with the compressor. We have seen alot bad caps this year. Ihopes this helps.

The serial number on that evaporator will have the date code in it, the model will tell the capacity (size). It looks like it is a 4 and a half ton or 54,000 BTU coil and has a TXV valve to meter the refrigerant.

Wiring a fan motor to a dual capacitor, the leads with the stake on's go to the fan and common.
Usually the brown with white strip goes to the middle or "C" terminal and the plain brown goes to the fan or "F" terminal the other three are power and usually use the black and red connected to the fan relay.

Common problems:

1. Fuses blown: Located near the outdoor unit, usually in a small box mounted on the side of the house. The electrical line will go in to the outdoor unit from this fuse box. Usually has a door to flip up or sideways, pull a cartridge out and the fuses will be behind the cartridge. If you don't have an ohm meter to check them, just take them to the nearest hardware store they can probably check them for you, or just change them both.
2. Circuit breakers tripped: Located usually in the main breaker box in the house or outside by your elec. meter. If breakers are tripped they will be noticeably different than other breakers. To reset, you have to pull them all the way over and back up. If they are reset , they will remain in the up position and look like the rest of the breakers.
3. Low on refrigerant: Most heat pumps have low pressure switches that will shut the unit down if the unit is low on refrigerant. If you don't have knowledge and tools to check refrigerant, this is when you will have to call a technician. If you do have the proper tools, I can step you through refrig. check.
*also, while you are at it, check the outdoor coil and make sure it is not dirty . On a Ruud you will have to look under and through the outdoor fins of the case. If you see a lot of dirt under the fins, your coil is dirty and you will need to wash it out good with a hose and sprayer. TURN POWER OFF BEFORE SERVICING. Hope this solve your problem. Mark

If you held the contactors at the condensor in and the outdoor fan and compressor started, you have a control circuitry problem. The thermostat is more than likely wired incorrectly. The red wire at the t-stat is the 24VAC hot. If you touch it to the green wire the indoor fan should start. If you touch it to the wire that is going to the coil on the contactor you pushed in (color unknown as I am not there) it should fire the compressor and outdoor fan. Thermostats can be very tricky sometimes. Based on what you have written it is definitely a control voltage problem. If you do not have 24VAC you need to check the input power on the transformer and make sure you are getting 24VAC output.

Whatever you do....do not take the red wire on the t stat and arbitrarily connect it to any other wires. One of those wires is the neutral side of the transformer and if you touch the hot red to it you will have a direct short and will need a new transformer.
