Nikon Coolpix 5000 Digital Camera - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Start up delay when using the MC-EU1 Remote Control with Coolpix cameras
When you turn the camera on it senses a device plugged into the USB port and must wait to determine what is connected (computer, remote, etc.). It may take up to ten seconds for the camera to realize that it is not connected to a computer and become ready to take photos.
If you turn the camera on and then press the Shutter button on the Remote it will turn on almost instantly.
Activating Tool Palette 2 tools in Nikon Capture
By default the tools found in Tool Palette 2 are used for editing NEF files. If a non-NEF file is opened these tools become inactive and cannot be used. To use the Tool Palette 2 options open a NEF file from a Nikon camera.
How can I use the Adobe Camera Raw plugin after installing Nikon Software?
During the installation of Nikon View or Picture Project, your system is checked for an installed copy of Adobe Photoshop. If a copy with the minimum version is found, Nikon View will install file format filters which will allow Photoshop to open a NEF/RAW file directly (there are other plugins for YCBCR TIFF format from supported cameras). If you have the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" software installed (optional in Photoshop version 7, included in Photoshop version CS) the Nikon file filters will open the file.
If you prefer to continue using the Adobe software, find and remove the following plugins: Nikon NEF Plugin (Nikon View) Nikon NEF Plugin LE (Picture Project) After a restart of Adobe Photoshop, the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" plugin will handle the opening of Nikon NEF/RAW format files.
Please note that there was an update for Adobe Camera Raw plugin for support of D70 and Coolpix 8700 RAW files, if you encounter difficulty opening raw files from any Nikon product after removal of the Nikon Plugins, please visit the Adobe support site to obtain the appropriate update for the Adobe Camera Raw plugin.
Studio Strobe not firing with Coolpix
The Coolpix line of cameras require a "tip positive" sync connection to an external strobe unit (when using the Nikon AS-15 Flash Sync Adapter). On some external Studio Strobe units the sync polarity is easy to change because of the type of plug:
On this type of connector simply turn the plug around and insert it with the male pin connectors in the other holes. Other types of connectors (such as the standard "phono" plug) are not generally changeable by the user.
If the Coolpix does not fire an external strobe check with the strobe manufacturer for sync polarity info.

Can not run Nikon Capture 3 - "Updated Driver Required"
Under some limited conditions, Nikon Capture 3 will fail to launch after the initial installation and you will not be presented with the opening dialog which allows you to select either "Trial" mode or be permitted to enter your serial key. A dialog box is displayed indicating that updated drivers are required, but the names of these drivers are not listed.
This installer replaces two files with updated versions which resolves this issue and allows Nikon Capture 3 to launch.
Do not install this update if you are already running Nikon Capture in trial or registered mode. This update is not required for any version of Nikon Capture other than 3.0. This updater is not needed for Macintosh users.
After downloading and decompressing, double click the "Setup" application to install.

Cannot connect Speedlight to SK-6 Power Bracket
A change was made in the flash power connector on later Nikon Speedlights and the Power Bracket Model SK-6. It is impossible to connect a flash with the older (square) connector to a newer SK-6 or vice versa.
The flash on the left has the older square-style connector, while the one on the right has the newer connector. Both the Speedlight and the SK-6 must have the same style connector. Please contact Nikon Service about having the units modified for compatibility.
NEF Image will not open - Macintosh
RAW NEF images from Nikon cameras are proprietary formatted raw data directly from the cameras's sensor. If the images are improperly transferred to the computer they will not be able to be opened and will give an "Unsupported File Format" warning.
Macintosh OS X has an "Image Capture" application (found in: Hard Drive/Applications/)that can be used to transfer images. If "Image Capture" is used NEF files will be corrupted and will not be able to be read. Only Nikon View, or manually dragging images from the mounted card, should be used to transfer NEF's.
To disable "Image Capture":
Double-click to open the hard drive and then the "Applications" folder
Double-click "Image Capture"
From the "Image Capture" menu choose "Preferences..."
In the "When a camera is connected" pop-up choose "No Application"
Close the Preferences window and Quit Image Capture
After disabling Image Capture, it will not launch when the camera is connected and you can use Nikon View to properly transfer NEF images.
