Our central heating unit will come on and then off within a minut

If it shuts down completely, it is probably a safety device. Doubt if it's the t'stat. This sounds like something is overheating and the safety is shutting down the unit. The safety could be the fan delay/limit switch. Also, there are usually several "Thermal Disc" type safety devices located near and around the heat exchanger. These can go bad. In other words, they can "Trip" at a temperature lower than the rated temp the devices is supposed to trip.
I would look here for you problem. Good Luck

FANS ARE WORKING BUT THE AIR IS NOT COLD

That was real deep diagnoses I'm betting the outside unit is the problem. check the outside for240-volts to the contactor if not backtrack for the lost voltages and remove the outside cover to check the little silver can (capacitor) for swollen at the top terminials, due to power surge.

Freon

Go to the supply house and ask for an in-line tap! SSSSSSSSSShhhhhhhhhh(the mechanic might had connected the wrong end of the hose,(one end has a hole and the other end has a valve stem depresser to depress the valve stem to let in-out freon.. Or the older type, you have a king valve and has to be turned to open or close the ports!) ssssshhhhhhhhh!!

Adding freon to my central air

Well duprees, first you got to have the right instrumentation for charge freon to a a/c system, now, the charge line is the thick line, wich it means the suction line, the colder line, or the most robust line on the compressor.
Then, the system uses freon 22, the right charge, with the system on and the compressor running is 68.5 to 70 psi.
This should give to you about 40 degrees(farenheit) at the evaporator, the panel that gets cold in the system.
This pressure should be at the low side, meaning thicker line in the compressor unit.
Hope this help you......

Good luck.......

Air conditioner problems

Check your filters first. Replace if needed. Also check that the evaporator fan or blower fan in the furnace is running. If this does not fix it you most likely have a low refrigerant charge.

Leak on home A/C

You need to have the system evacuated to fix this leak. First thing is for safty reasons, for your protection and refrigerant release. second is to make sure no contaminates are released inside your system. The tech should recover the refrigerant fix the leak, then purge with nitrogen, then pull a deep vaccum to 500 microns and it should hold for 20 mins. then he should recharge the system with refrigerant.

Hope this helps

Air conditioner

Inside fan motor should be checked. Take a piece of paper and hold it to your return. If it isn't pulling the paper in you have a bad fan motor. Also check to see if the large line on your outside unit has ice.

Compressor on central unit wont kick on

you need to use a meter to ensure that you are getting control voltage from the xfrmr. Also check it at the coil side of the contactor if you feel comfortable doing this but be careful of the line voltage side. If you are getting power on the coil side of the contactor usually a 24v signal from the tstat from the area labeled y and the contactor is not pulling in most likely you will need to replace the contactor. If the contactor is pulling in verify the amp draw on the compressor with the tag.
